Generating a world with depth
« on: September 13, 2010, 09:54:15 am »

My worlds always have hfs at like zlevel -50 or so.

Is there any way to increase this by...a lot? I'll take anything i can get, but i'd like to have at least 100 -zlevels. don't mind what it is, just don't want it being so small.

I've been wondering about that...I have the same exact problem, only in my maps magma generally begins at -30 z-lvl.

It makes for a very swiss cheesy world, considering that you have to fit 3 layers of caverns in 30 z-levels.

Towards the bottom of the world gen info you'll see a couple lines that list z-levels between layer X. You can up these numbers a whole bunch to fill in a lot of space in between caverns and magma and whatnot.

"Island" worlds seem to be significantly deeper than "region" worlds. Also, areas near oceans or mountains seem to be the deepest.

Always wondered what that was for, just genned a world with -133 z layers.

You might want to put that second part in a spoiler. It is awesome, though. I haven't seen one in a while.

actually, on second thought, maybe not so great an idea, fps is less than half what it normally is, i probably gotta abandon this one, can put the seed and embark location up for anyone that wants one of these and has a supercomputer just lying around.

Yeah, I usually leave the layers between caverns at around 10.

I don't usually have too many fps problems with that, and my computer is fairly awful as it is.

My current world has only a single cavern layer and a hundred z-levels between it and the ground level, to allow room for my underground megaproject - the top half of the embark also has extremely steep and high mountains, so the total z-levels available for underground exploration tops out at around 150.  It all depends on your world gen parameters.

I'm not convinced about the 'islands are deeper' theory - the cavern depth parameters for default islands are the same as default regions.  Someone needs to gen a few of each and test the theory for science.
