considering picks are the only object capable of digging through adamantine, it's not surprising that they make good weapons

It's probably made from baby bone, with a handle of baby leather. Probably uses the leg bones wound together for the handle, the pelvis for the handle/pick joint, and the pick is the spine.

But that's all in theory, of course. Not like I've made a pick out of my own 5 month old baby before.

Picks seem kinda like spear-equivalents to me. Axes cause catastrophic damage but suck against armour, swords are less damaging but somewhat better vs armour, then spears/picks, then blunt weapons doing the best against armour but doing less catastrophic damage.

In my current fortress I have a legendary miner (Neil Patrick Harris) with 6 kills. Killed two armoured goblins and a troll during a siege and 3 Olm-men in a cavern he was mining in.

They are seriously deadly.

Misc. Object User might only apply in arena mode then; I'm still trying to get to the bottom of a crash-on-embark bug that I'm pretty sure is my PC's fault instead of DF's. I'm pretty sure that skill's going to do something important once more tools arrive though.

Never used Dwarf Therapist, mods or tilesets in all the years I've been playing.
I think Toady's confusing interface better simulates the experience of a bunch of disorganised drunken dwarves running a fort.

For more effectiveness, shouldn't pick be made of some heavier metal than clownite?

Anyway, their effectiveness is not surprising, given how close they are from some medieval weapons (try looking bec de corbin on google).

Yes, miners are usually buff and know how to handle their picks and will make useful emergency recruits. I think the point was more to ponder if picks are a good choice for dedicated military dwarves, and I believe they are.

You don't even have to have them as dedicated soldiers - they could probably train their weapon skill faster by digging out the world, in which case your entire mining corp could double as your standing army when needed. They aren't "emergency recruits" in this case - rather, they're always training.
