I remember watching one of my friends play one of her first few forts. This was before I had started playing, so it really marked me, in a funny but sad and twisted way aswell. She had named the first few seven dwarves after me, her, and other friends.

One or two years in, no immigrants arrived. My dwarf died by getting torn to pieces by a werewolf, 2 others in a cave in, the hunter was eaten by undead prey, cook went depressive and offed himself through drowning, her dwarf threw a tantrum and was killed by the last one. As the undead critters invaded, she hid herself on a little panic room she carved for herself. She was dying of starvation.

Then my friend finally found out how to engrave, and tried it. The engraving was named something along the lines of "sourloss", it depicted a coffin.

I wish I could make this up.  :-[

My mason went berserk and attacked her baby. Her lifelong friend, my miner, was forced to kill her with a pick. Later, the baby died of thirst, having nobody to care for him. He was buried by his mother.

I think he meant buried by as in buried beside, not buried by as in the verb.

And then, they will be weaponized. Like everything in this game, from kittens to babies, everything is a potential device of murder.
So if baseless speculation is all we have, we might as well treat it like fact.

I get this feeling after every battle or tantrum spiral, to be honest. I've spent years of these people's lives watching over them, guiding them from above as they build their homes and lives, and I'm not ashamed to admit I get attached to the ornery little buggers quite quickly.

Same here, getting attached. That's why it was so sad to see all my dwarves dead.

Second that. The more you tune and dote the legendary dorfs, the more attached you become to their "lives."

Engraved on the monitor is an exceptionally designed image of FPS in Dwarf Fortress and it's multicore support by Toady. Toady is raising the multicore. The artwork relates to the masterful multicore support by Toady for the Dwarf Fortress in midwinter of 2010. Toady is surrounded by dwarves. The dwarves are rejoicing.

I had this saved in a text file, not quite sure where I got it from.

Legendary? Hell, I feel like this about every last one of my dorfs, even the relatively useless ones.

Never used Dwarf Therapist, mods or tilesets in all the years I've been playing.
I think Toady's confusing interface better simulates the experience of a bunch of disorganised drunken dwarves running a fort.

One of my first forts (40d) went in a serious downward spiral, that came to an end on the first day of Spring. Please understand, I didn't get farming, and had trouble doing anything (I never looked at the wiki, while I learned to play) that could get me food, so my fort was surviving on fish, and the food/drink I brought. Now I shall tell the tale of Boatspaddle:

So during the first several months I was doing fine, my Dwarves had beds, rooms, food, and even some crafts, but then one day towards the end of summer my Jeweler went off to grab some rough gems, to my surprise she was slain by a Giant Cave Spider. Fearing for my fort I sent all of the Dwarves after the GCS. Luckily my miner was a proficient wrestler/miner because otherwise they would of all died , but because of his skill they were able to kill the Spider. Though there was a major problem, my fisher Dwarf was missing her right lower arm, and left leg. During the next few months my Fort survived on the leftover food, and river water. But then winter came, without food and water my fort, suffered, and I sent my leader out hunting, she came back with in the arms of her fellow Dwarf (though she managed to get some food). At this point I had a miner, a woodcutter, a carpenter, a stoneworker, and two critically injured Dwarves, all of which are hungry, and thirsty. Next I send my woodcutter out with a crossbow, and he never returns (Evidentally a few batmen thought it would be funny to throw him down a chasm). Giving up hope, my leader goes berserk and attacks her own hunting dog, yet another Dwarf dies. After that the poor crippled Dwarf dies, despite the stoneworker's constant wish to feed her. Soon after all of the Dwarves will die, one to starvation and two to dehydration, two of them just die in their rooms, but the last Dwarf to survive refused to give up. This last Dwarf was the stoneworker who fed his crippled lover, the Dwarf who kept trying to get food for his fellow dwarves, the Dwarf who never gave up, and so as the spring warmth thawed the ice he ran for water, dropping dead halfway there.

:'( Damn that fort was dramatic (to play at least).
