Too many Troglodytes
« on: September 12, 2010, 05:54:14 pm »

I'm new to Dwarf Fortress and the forums.  I colonized the caverns for the first time and since I have had these things run into my cage traps and now i have about 15 of them and i don't know what to do.

Build the troglodyte cages in your barracks through b-j-x, hook them up to levers, and let your military tear them to shreds.

It's fairly nice experience.

Or build them in a room with the only exit lined with weapon traps. Release trogs with lever, as they try to escape they will be sliced to bits by the weapon traps.

While i was setting up the cages a FB showed up so instead of training with the troglodytes i trained with a humanoid made of vomit.

Edit [PET] and [CAN_SPEAK] into their raws.  Tame them, let them loose in your fort, and hope one socializes enough to be elected mayor.

if you want to get rid of them really fast once you've got a military going just set a pit/pond zone with i over a hole in the floor and station your military by the cages and throw the troglodytes in the pit, your dwarves will go to release them and your military will run over and kill them as soon as they're out of the cages.

Saves all the fuss with levers and mechanisms and other long methods.
Edit: just be careful, it seems to be a pretty high priority job so you can assume a minimum of 3 are going to be released at once possibly all of them, if your military isn't able to handle a lot them at once they could get overwhelmed.

You think 15 is a lot? Over the years I've acquired over 30 of them. First layer is crawling trogs.

I've never seen a crawler, much less tamed one, but according to the wiki they shred through unarmed dwarves like tissue paper so they should be somewhat effective. What have you got to lose?

well i got 15 trogs within my first 4 months of being down there along with a giant toad, bugbat, 3 naked mole dogs, and a crawler. The thing that sucks i have no dungeon master so all of these nice little monsters are just in my stockpile.
