Obsidian Shortswords
« on: September 11, 2010, 09:33:09 pm »

I've been told (by the wiki) that Obsidian itself is kind of buggy. Especially it's uses in swords.

Can anyone tell me the extent of these bugs, and any possible work arounds? Also, are they still an equivalent to steel shortswords?

Right now when you make a rock short sword it comes out made of wood, with all the properties of wood, thus making it useless.  This bug is being addressed and should be fixed in the next release.

Hmm, I was sure I read somewhere that someone had done testing and the resultant swords did have the properties of wood, oh well, I never use them myself and they are going to be fixed shortly so whatever  8)

uh, wouldn't chipped obsidian swords be obscenely sharp for the first few cuts, then very dull after that? because that's what obsidian does irl

Dwarves are so pro at dealing with rocks, they STAY super sharp.

Well, if they weren't made out of wood >.>

ISTR someone saying something to the effect that Obsidian had been fixed so that, whilst it was still obscenely sharp, it had the armour penetration of a wet rag. Which actually sorta makes sense.

So it's presumably magnificent against animals & opponents in cloth/leather, but craptastic against metal.

In real life, if you don't completely shatter/break the obsidian blade, any material that flakes off the edge just causes the edge to be resharpened.  They are actually used in (some) surgery because they give a cleaner cut than surgical steel knives.

And, yeah, it should be horrible against armored opponents, but slice like a hot knife through butter against anything meat-based. ;)

To be exact, it has twice the sharpness of steel but in all other respects it is basically another stone.

Mayan was a language?

Well, anyways, I think Toady needs to get on magic weapons. Oh the lulz that will insue.

("A kobald thief made it into in my stockpiles, and right as he walked through my booze supply, my legendary sworddwarf, with his magical shortsword, and 5 of his legendary buddies jumped onto the scene. The kobold gets stabbed, and bursts into flame. They all burned.")

(Edit: I just realised this has nothing to do with anything in this thread, I was just thinking... Weapons... And how they work... You know...)

Actually, Mayan IS a language. Their descendants still speak a language derived from it today.

And besides, what did you think the Mayans spoke?

The Mayans speak Spanish now, in the same way the British speak Low Gothic.

Yeah, I dunno, You just don't hear about people going and learning "Mayan", and the only old languages I know about are the germanic based ones, cause that's all our history class covered.

Not even Mayanese? (Hah, mayonnaise)
