An inexperienced player and his random questions.
« on: September 11, 2010, 04:39:27 pm »

Perhaps you, the DF Junkies of the forums, can help out a semi-inexperienced player with some random questions?

Do Sneaking Kobolds/Goblins get spotted when they are one tile over from an Animal, or only when they actually collide?
Can you have wells directly over one another?
Are hippos the Blood thirsty animals that the wiki says?
Are Elephants still BoatMurderesque? As in, blood thirsty carnivores? Or is it safe to capture them and tame them?
Are hippos worth catching and breeding?
Will carp appear inside my handmade reservoirs?
If a river has no carp to begin with, will they ever?
Are Stingray Dangerous?
Can Flying/Swimming units move Up and over in one turn if the space above them is solid?
Should Elves be allowed inside the Fortress?

Many thanks

-It all depends on the spotter/animal's spatial sence.

-Yes, don't know if they'll all work

-Not really

-No - tame away

-Yes

-No - only vermin fish will do that

-No - only vermin fish will do that

-Possibly. I'm not sure if they have a syndrome attached to their sting, so some confirmation on that would be nice
They're not that dangerous due to the lack of poison, but this is still DF

-No

-Only if they come bearing booze, seeds you want or plants

1: One tile away.
2:Not sure, problably not.
3: Likely not unless someone get's too close or something.
4: Tame and capture are actually incredibly profitable for their delicious children. They aren't aggresive.
5:Not as much as elephants, but still really useful.
6:Only if the passage to the water source can lead off map. (Carp are not spawned as vermin, rather as animals like elk, wolves, etc.).
7:As stated previosly, they may come in the near future, depending on where you are.
8:Not sure. Maybe...
I think only if the space right below their target is an open space.
9: Yes. However, they may bring bears to your fort if you annoy them, so sieze cloth and chop wood frequently.

EDIT: aww crap, ninja'd

Should Elves be allowed inside the Fortress?

Are you a tree wood-banning hippie, or are you a dwarf?

Elves are NEVER allowed into the fortress. Steal their items, lock them outside to watch the massacre of their beautiful trees with a sea of MAGMA! you get bonus points for killing them too.

stupid elves...

???
River creatures don't migrate from off-map.

They did in 40d... Fish such as Salmon, for instance.

You are talking about the vermin ones. The non-vermin ones migrate normally, just never in brooks.

Or exotic animals. If you're lucky (and not too generous when trading), elves will bring all sorts of exotic creatures. For the price of a few exceptional microcline trumpets, you may be able to buy things like giant lions, saltwater crocodiles, elephants or any of the several varieties of gibbons.

I gots me some jungle elves in my current game.

A serrated silver disc or two is usually enough to buy what you want.

Those serrated disks are worth a lot, why would you pay so much for them?

Why would you pay in the first place?

Engraved on the monitor is an exceptionally designed image of FPS in Dwarf Fortress and it's multicore support by Toady. Toady is raising the multicore. The artwork relates to the masterful multicore support by Toady for the Dwarf Fortress in midwinter of 2010. Toady is surrounded by dwarves. The dwarves are rejoicing.

Unfortunately, trees don't burn...  :( But elves do!  8)

The only way I've found to deal with elves is
1. Build a drowning depot. Magma is obviously better. Kill off all the first caravan. Slaughter the diplomat.
2. They should be pissed off.
3. Every year thereafter, when the caravan comes check the unit list to see the animals they bring; seize what you need and burn the rest to teach them a lesson.
4. Profit!

I trade the stuff I want for a magma safe (usually iron) serrated disc, wait until all that stuff is in my stockpiles, then magmafy them.

Killing elves is unprofitable. If you piss them off, they start bringing various pets; if you piss them off too much they start bringing wooden armor, weapons and elven bone bolts.

I think pets are better.
