Graphics stay the same, so you only need to copy appropriate files (and tweak init settings if you replace a tileset).

The files you need to copy should be in data/art and raw/graphics.

Once you've copied the files over, go to data/init/init.txt in your copy of 40d and copy everything from WINDOWED to the bottom of the GRAPHICS block to the same place in your new .31 copy. You can actually just copy everything in the GRAPHICS block alone, but it's probably safer to copy over the other nearby settings (resolution and such) as well, which is why I suggest doing so.

Honestly though, you should use the newest version. Wasn't there a 'complete noob' pack with all the extras? If someone can link that I would suggest grabbing that, and Ironhand's graphic set which I like.

Alright. I only suggested the new one because, for one, I've never had a dwarf fall in a river and, for another, anvils only cost 100 points now. Big change.

Also you can alter your starting points if you want to, when genning a world with parameters.

In case not, the graphics you have (I haven't checked) are probably Captain Mayday's, which the pack includes. It also includes the aforementioned Ironhand's, and Phoebus', along with a ton of other things you might find useful.
