Five
« on: September 10, 2010, 06:03:02 pm »

For the first time ever, I am starting a game with a plan! That means that I know when it will end!

You are one of Five time travellers, sent back in time to seek a better history. At Five points in the past, you will have Five turns to influence a key event that will chance the history of humanity. (For my sanity, there are not 32 ends, there are an entirely accidental Five, splitting into 10 since the last choice is a free option. The first four, however, you will have to work for. Some choices can be reached by multiple paths. I have all of them planned out in a 813 by 931 PNG image.)

Every character has up to Five skills:
 - Remote manipulation: Weak telekenesis.
 - Opinion adjustment: Change peoples' minds!
 - Minor foresight: React faster because you somewhat know what is coming.
 - Mechanical marvel: good with machinery.
 - Temporal instability: better chance to survive death.

Each skill will add +1 to related rolls.

Skills are decided by:
 - One free choice.
 - All other skills get two dice rolls. If either is a Five (11 in 36 chance), you get that skill.

If I am unable to continue, I will pass my note(s) along to whoever will take over. Every possibility is planned for.

Entrants: Pick a skill, and optionally give a character name. First Five will play.

Edit: I don't mind sharing the plan of what the game may become, but anyone who sees it will be unable to play in this or any other games of it. Part of the fun will be that you do no know what might happen, except by past games, if at all.

I suspect you've never tried doing many illegal things yet in your game. The second the CCS knows you're "active", they'll come down on you like the hammer of God.

First event:

In a research building, one scientist is researching a technology that will change the world. It is a (much needed) source of free energy, but as an unintended side effect, it would cause contact with hostile foes from an alternate dimension. It is up to you to decide what will happen, and then ensure that it happens that way. (If you do not intervene, there will be an equal chance of every outcome(in all but one event, there are only two). Also, either outcome has a chance at every ending. Also, I noticed a mistake that results in one path having *six* events)

I should have remembered to describe *something*...

It is a fairly large device in the centre of a large room. Roughly two floors high with various metal cables leading to the sides from unseen mechanism below. t is both fairly robus and easily disrupted by slight errors. A crowd of scientists watch from an upper level that circles the room. Opinions vary, and about half of them are there to see it fail while most of the rest want to see it succeed. If it *barely* succeeds or fails, their opinion will decide the result. If you can make it an astounding success or utter failure, it won't matter what they think. Everything else is fairly reasonable.

Imagine this, but more fancy and (mad?) sciencish (SCIENCEish?), in a circular room, with various bits of clutter and materials around it, and someone sitting behind the controls.

I say we blow the thing.

Discretely check out the electrical and mechanical components surrounding the main object

Hrrm. This is a bugger. Free energy, but a war with hostile foes, or no war, but still energy problems. Still, there are other ways to get energy.

Walk over and hear all the scientists opinions.

Here is a 1/10th scale version of the map, with colour-coding removed on the lines.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I examine the system used to generate the free power. What are the main risks?
1+1: Well, there are risks of alien invasion or energy shortage...

go to the above platform and ask they are doing
6: Most of them are watching to see what will happen when the prototype is activates. Quite a few tell you that they disagree with how you used the machine as a platform to jump off of on your way up.

I say we blow the thing.

Discretely check out the electrical and mechanical components surrounding the main object
3+1: Most of the delicate parts are within the device itself, but the control panel looks rather important, so breaking it would probably stop it in some way. There are Five large metal cables running to it, four of them from the floor, the other from the control panel. You feel that you could almost identify the contents of the cables, and you are sure that only some of them are power cables, others with fluids or gasses.

Hrrm. This is a bugger. Free energy, but a war with hostile foes, or no war, but still energy problems. Still, there are other ways to get energy.

Walk over and hear all the scientists opinions.
1: The only opinion they share with you is their dislike of Buntu's stunt getting up, and some thank you for being reasonable and using the stairs.

Adjust opinions to the negative.
1+1: Opinions already are quite negative, as a result of Buntu's actions, but opinions of the fate of the prototype are still roughly balanced.
