I consider it an accomplishment when a fort finally starts getting engraving of goblins getting crushed by draw bridges, encased in ice, dying from exploding after a fall and being mauled by axedwarves, werewolves and pet giants. The goblin is cringing.  The goblin is in a fetal position. Art!

I dunno, my current fort has a wide variety of topics. From gods to animals to household objects and yes the mauling of dwarves by grizzly bears. I also got some current events like when a couple of my dwarves were killed by a deer (don't ask), various artifacts and appointments etc. Then again my engravers tend to work in teams of three or more so maybe that's the issue.

Strangely, most of my engravings in my latest fort are horrific scenes of a dragon burning and eating humans, or a volcano goddess getting steadily more and more pissed... Or rutherers. Or renditions of rutherers. Or renditions of renditions of rutherers.

Like the others said, I think it has something to do with the area. For instance; My engravers were running around engraving pictures of some Human taming polar bears 80 some years before my fortress was even founded. And low and behold, that fortress was on a tundra. I had entire corridors devoted to pictures of this guy taming fucking polar bears, and now I imagine him riding into my fortress with an army of polar bears slaughtering all my dwarves.
