Fishing drives me insane, so I don't do it. (The labor is too high priority. NOTHING GETS DONE BUT FISH GETTING.) My dwarves still live, they just farm.

I don't even bother with fishing on maps with just murky pools. If you want a decent fishing industry for food, I'd suggest you setup shop on a stream, river, lake or ocean. And use a dedicated fisher, with another dwarf set to fish cleaning to keep it running as smoothly as possible.
