How does weapon damage work now?
« on: September 09, 2010, 10:57:26 am »

The wiki is showing a lot of number on a graph.  If you had to calculate average damage, how would one do it?  Is it possible?

I'm just not sure how to read the wiki...

Sorry dude. We've got no clue as to how Toady made the formulas.

ok
a axe this table shows all three attack a dwarf can make with a axe.

Type            Size    Attack  Attack Type     Contact Area     Penetration     Velocity     Skill Used
Battle Axe    800    Hack    Edge    40000                6000              1.25x    Axe
                              Flat slap     Blunt    40000               (6000)              1.25x
                     Pommel strike     Blunt    1000               (1000)                   1x

size is just the weapons weight
Attack Type, edge use the MAX_EDGE (How sharp the material is) to set how good a weapon is at cuting.
Contact Area how much of the weapon is used is the attack, high numbers can cut of bigger body parts.
Penetration only works with edged attacks, how deep a cut can go.
Velocity helps to add force (E_k =\tfrac{1}{2} mv^2 )

There is no "Average damage" because the system isn't based on hit-points anymore. What it is based on, nobody but toady really knows. Sometimes I wish I could have a peek at the source code and see how things really work. I have a fantasy that I'd see some bit of code and say "Silly Toady, it would be so much simpler if you just did this." but in reality I'd probably stare at it dumbfounded and get that weird feeling in my brain when I almost understand something that I get when I read something like this.

Why does my adventurer keep crying?
Greiger's is actually correct...  sadly enough.  The emotional circumstance processor is still turned on, with a randomly rolled up personality, but they can't express themselves or take control...  they can only cry.

What does weapon material do?  I know it makes hammers heavier, but what is it's effect on other weapon classes?

Sharpness of the edge, which is probably related to, putting it bluntly, how easy it is to cut through things.

Some other things as well, probably.

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.
