If I recall correctly, bulls can still release spores while in a cage and impregnate uncaged cows. Is this still true?

I often chain up a male and a female of some animals outside the cage.  They're chained up so they can't wander around getting in the way but they can still breed.  (DF biology uses spores I guess.)  As soon as I see the "has given birth to" message I jam those new ones in the cage until I need them for something.

Also yes you need to let animals out of a cage to train them, after they have been tamed. Babies of tamed animals are automatically tame. If you have a wild, tamable animal that is not yet tame, you have to use "Tame Large Animal" at the kennels.  Then once your animal trainer has tamed it, it can be let out of the cage and trained.

I don't understand, though that is about right with anything DF related.
I just hope he dies the same death that all dwarfs deserve: liver disease.

No, a creature in a cage cannot interact with anything outside of the cage.
