You create an eel, covered with tentacles. It also has lungs and a beak. You make it as big as possible, and send it up onto land.

This 'land' is covered with large, pillar-like plants, and populated with several squishy animals. At least, you think they are squishy, the eyes of the eel have dried out long before.

As the eel move forward, it feels a piece of ground that is more rough than before. A little bit of exploration reveals that it is a path!

Now, which way, right or left?

Always left.

I was wondering, is it possible for our hive-mind to infect plants?
We could totally be an Entroom.

also, we shouldn't waste points adapting our fungus to land, because making some drone with a large water filled bladder to live in is easy.

also, exactly how large is the eel thing?

If we're going to waste points on Jethro the points are either going to go into evolving out of the fungal hive-mind stage into a mobile hive-mind stage, or into making Jethro have a higher chance of survival.

For now, to the left!

... or we could just grow in a half rotten log and get carried around by minions. or grow on special made horns of specially made for the purpose minions, or a number of things like that.
Any evolutionary upgrades of the stationary part of the hivemind should focus on improving hivemind type stuff, like intelligence and range of communication.

The hive mind is just the brain of a multi-bodied organisms. There is no point in improving his walking abilities or anything. As far as I'm concerned we could stay in the sea and just grow an antenna.

yea, that can also work.

Why exactly are we sending stuff onto lnad in the first place anyway? No more food underwater? just serching for new cool genes to steal?

Because in most people's mind, evolution is a more-or-less linear process with land being "after" water. Or maybe just because develloping technologies underwater is a mess. (No fire for a start).

I said mobile, not evolving out of the water. If we're going down the hive-mind course we can just make our own amphibious frame similar to the creature I suggested earlier. It wouldn't be the hive-mind itself, but it would be our otherwise-brainless body. Which is close enough.
By frame I mean something we can stay in, but evacuate if need be.

The way I see it, the best kind of hivemind is the kind that are so gigantically huge-ishly big that nothing short of orbital bombardment could destroy them.

That also mean that any hit to the hive-mind could destroy some useful memories or capacities.

Which is why we will be doing the bombardment from our orbital ships which are made of ourself.

In the future.

You head down the left path. It is quite long, but your eel is quite slow. (As for its size, about that of a human.) Suddenly, the path ends. As the eel sits there, wondering what to do, one of its tentacles gets chopped off. Ouch.

Oh man. Have the eel fling its tentacles around wildly until everything within a yard of it stops living.
