We should start simple. Our first scout should be a small mammal, a rodent, maybe a Nutria?

It should have the best eyes we can give it, and something approximating feet.
It should also be smart enough to find its way around both in and out of the water.

Maybe we can develop a shelled critter, like a snail if we can't get legs, like a crab if we can, that has infectin' tentacles that come out of its mouth, and photosynthetic patches all along its shell. If possible, we should have an amplification for our radio communications as well.

Or... we could enhance our fungus form with the ability to survive out of water. Coat the earth with our mind! We ARE planet Xeno!!
