Order the hunters and McUseless to go focus on infecting. Just order all new members of the hive to infect, eating as they go, until you have an army of 15 or so. Once that's over with order 5 of your minions to stay as guards, the rest can go hunt, eating as necessary so that you don't end up starved again.

You the hunters and McUseless to go and infect everything they find.

They come back, their numbers doubled.

Hive:
Hive-mind: 1 (You)
Infected fishes: 8

Materials:
Food: 0 (Food needed: 8 ) (Stupid forum, thinking that 8 ) (With no space) was really 8))

Just keep sending them out to infect until we have about 15.

You send 6 of your infected fishes to go infect.

They come back with five more infected fishes.

One of your guards dies from starvation. Shame.

Hive:
Hive-mind: 1 (You)
Infected fishes: 12

Materials:
Food: 0 (Food needed: 12)

Eventually, you get 15 infected fishes. You extract some DNA from them, and settle in to evolve.

You can specialize 2 cells/create 2 organs, and improve 3 organs/cells.

Order hive to collect food. Create lungs. Improve hive-mind, and eyes (Or however we ended up seeing things).

Specialize: Control Cellsx2: Put some cells into making our infected need less food.

Improve.
Tentacles: make them stronger.
Hive-Mindx2: make it so we can communicate with our infected indirectly.

Develop an organ that can send and receive radio signals and link it to our hivemind (which should also be improved)

We should get some sort of stomach/digestive tract. Just a small one, to be energy efficient.

We should improve our leaves to produce more energy, storing the excess in our fat cells.

Eventually, we may be able to lure potenrial slaves in with fatty "bait."

Develop a gland that produces communication pheromones so we can start to have remote control over our subjects.

I just realized that we are exactly like the Beast from Homeworld: Cataclysm.  This is awesome.
