We'd have the ability to magically reach terminal velocity with no outside stimuli, why would losing our elevator temporarily stop us?

Err, then how would we stop. Or, you know, turn?

Propulsion System: Elevator!!!!

And then while we're in space?
Elevator keeps going up, bending where needed.

Can't complain with that.

We'd be breaking the law of physics by reaching terminal velocity without any help anyway, there's nothing that would stop us from using quick bursts to speed/slow us enough to turn/land harmlessly to ourselves. Maybe not to the surrounding environment, but we'd be perfectly safe!

Except we'd be linking planets together?
Ah well, the plot is strong in this one.

Is this good for everybody?

Name: Jethro's Mind Probe.
Propulsion: Elevator (Will need to construct a track in front of it.) ACCELERATION: 1-5 light seconds.
Extras: Cold fusion or fission
          Armour
Creature Torpedo Launchers (Staffed with WOLFTOPI)
          Solar Collection Array.
          Flamberge for ground assaults.
(Sorry, no terminal velocity. Else, we'll be squished into a flat pile of goo. Thank you, relativity.)

Needs the ability to transfer things it finds back to Planet JETHRO.

We haven't actually built it yet, so let's just add that as a quick perk to extras.

Agreed.
While we're on it, we can convert the elevator to a shipyard-type spawning ball to more easily spawn large-ass ships. IN SPACE!
After the mindprobe's left for 'SPACE!' already, ofcourse.

THE SOLAR SYSTEM:

The sun is rather ordinary, and has a surface temperature of 1000 C, which is normal.

A small rocky planet sits around 1.4 light minutes from the sun. Its day is worth 90 of ours, and orbits the sun every 90 days. In other words, it is tidally locked. It has no moons

Next, is our planet. Sitting comfortably in the Goldilocks zone, it is 8.1 light minutes from the sun. There is only one moon on this planet, at a comfortable distance, but still close enough to affect the tides. It is quite large in comparison to other moons.

After that is what only can be called our sister planet. It is of similar shape, rotation and size of our own, but sits 9.6 light minutes away from the sun, and is thus far to cold for life to form. It is orbited by 5 moons, of various shapes and sizes. The smallest is a large asteroid, while the biggest is slightly smaller than our moon.

An asteroid belt lies right beyond that, around 38 light minutes in, and is full of raw materials that can easily be collected. They could also form a base for future spaceships.

After the asteroid belt is a small, blue gas giant lying around 50 light minutes. Well, small for a gas giant. 8 known moons (More like large asteroids) orbit it, though more should be found when we approach it.

Next, at 72 light minutes, is our guardian, the largest gas giant in the solar system, which helps to prevent asteroids from slamming into our planet with greater frequency. If it wasn't for it's large gravitation well, we would probably have been wiped out by now. 10 moons orbits its pink-hued skies, though more should be found, eventually.

Other planets will be found by the boundaries of the system, once we star getting close. And of course, the Oot cloud is always waiting by the edge.

So, we have a lot of choices (and naming) to do. Where shall Jethro's Mind Probe go first?

SHIPS:
Name: Jethro's Mind Probe.
Propulsion: Elevator: ACCELERATION: 1-5 light seconds.
Extras: Cold fusion or fission
          Armour
Creature Torpedo Launchers (Staffed with WOLFTOPI)
          Solar Collection Array.
          Flamberge for ground assaults.
