This is looking pretty lulzy. for a suggestion for what to get next, make some sort of predatory plant that has everything an insect would want(bright colours, ultraviolet patterns, high sugar content nectar) that would be able to capture the insect and get its DNA. We already have a proboscis from somewhere, right?

We are doing that already. You are not the first one to point that out.

Don't some fruits grow from flowers? We'll just say we use those kinds of fruit to satisfy both ideas.

Everything that either has fruit or flowers, has both. They flower first, for pollination, then bear the seeds in the fruit, for dispertion through the bowels of animals. We could just stop at the bowels, develop an ulcer in the creature, and get into the bloodstream, where we have a direct path to the brain and control. We will just have to have some acid resitance for the stumoch, and somthing to prevent being eaten alive by WBC...

What should we do with the creatures? Surely they have other settlements.

If they have develpoed technology, then they have the correct hands to do so, so that way we can create our sentient creatures, with all of the crabs/bugs/plants to help them fight wars!

The impression I got is we reached sentience and beyond without even noticing, because we can make creatures better than any tools we can make or imagine making.
What we need isn't the dawn of Mind or even an agricultural revolution, it's the scientific method that's next.

That one is obvious: both. It's not like we have any lack of cannon fodder.
