Well, it exists IRL, but I've got no idea how old it is.

You begin to infect every piece of plant matter that is connected to your root-network or some other method. This will, of course, take time.

You create a creature with bright bioluminescence, to light up the under-ground cavern that the two crabs are in.

Speaking of the crabs, you order them to attack whatever they have found. One of the crabs manages to pin it down, so you order the other crab to attack, while the first crab keeps pinning the creature. Soon, it stops squirmming. Sadly, when the bioluminescent creature arrives in the pipe, the unknown creature is squished beyond any sort of recognition. Unless, of course, it looked like a smashed-up blob in the first place.

Have the worthless drone consume a small amount of the mush. If it dies then have the Attack Drone avoid the goop. If it lives then have all three drones devour the remains.

Unsurprisingly, the drone lives, and everyone gets to feast on the tasty, tasty goop.

Have the three drones continue exploring the tunnel.

In the meantime create 6 worthless drones, and 2 light bulb drone. Use the new spy network to search for more of those holes. Form two search parties consisting of 3 worthless, and 1 light bulb. Have the new search parties explore the newly discovered holes.

You send one of the drones back with the DNA. When he returns, you tell the three drones to continue to explore the tunnel. Two more sets of drones are made, and are sent to find more shafts. What? It looks like the first exploration party has come to a dead-end, what appears to be a stone door is blocking the path. No matter how the three drones try to shift it, it won't budge.
