What benefit is there in making all of your targets in separate rooms?

Takes care that archery ranges don´t overlap.
I do it the same way all the time

So what if they do overlap?  Does this cause any problems with their usage or efficiency of training?

I let mine overlap all the time with no issues.

AFAIK no...
just more beautiful to have everyone with his own spot to train,
without risking any dwarf running around in his line of fire,
because s/he thinks that the neighboring target belongs to his/her own shooting range as well :D

Theres a massive wait for allocation of ammo i hear, its bugged.

This.  I had hundreds of bolts, but it wasn't until I made some new ones and they were put in a new stockpile that they actually showed up on the ammunition screen.

While adding magma to anything will make it dwarfy, adding the word "magma" to your post does not necessarily make it funny.

I had a problem similar to this, getting "Soldier (cannot follow order)" but with axedwarves, and the particular problem in my case appeared to be that although I'd designated a barracks I hadn't set "train" on it.
