Year 2
Summer
Our metal industry is so slow getting off the ground because we only have charcoal to fuel it. Soon I think I'll have to switch over to a magma based metal smithing operation. On the bright side, I was able to secretly order some silver coins minted and brought into my room. These should prove very useful if I ever need to buy myself some "friends" back in the Mountainhome. I also had a statue brought into my room to liven things up a bit. Maybe this posting won't be entirely terrible.
The skeletal giant eagle that killed that fisherdwarf a few seasons returned and murdered some guy's dog. The guy claimed he wanted to bury his dog. I told him to go get the corpse himself if he wanted it that bad. No way I'm riskin' my neck against some Giant Eagle, much less an undead one, for some stupid dog.
Year 2
Fall
I do believe the Goblins are beginning to take notice of our little fort, for the moment I'm going to tone down the rock crafts until we're better prepared, I've been so busy trying to make enough booze for the fort to live on I haven't even had time to go trade with the caravans. Doesn't help that every damn caravan that comes here wants to talk my head off about shit I don't care about, let me just unload some damn goods on you so you can go entertain your nobles with them or something. We're practically drowning in rock crafts, and puppies. Too many bitches in this fort, literally.
Anyhow, back to the topic of the Goblins, we caught no less than 5 Goblin Snatchers trying to enter the fort. One of them actually made off with a baby. Granted, I wasn't really too concerned about losing some worthless child but the parents seem upset by the whole ordeal. I told her to go into the dining room and enjoy one of our fine plump helmet roasts. It works every time, she doesn't even remember the child now.
Some dwarf made an artifact bracelet this season, made him some super special engraver somehow, so I ordered him to engrave every damn surface in the fort. Everyone seems a lot happier. I gave him his own bedroom, which he seemed to like well enough. Some people are just so easy to please.
Year 2
Winter
I think I'm the only person in this fort who hasn't caught "the stupid" that seems to be descending on this fort like a plague. First Monigan decided it'd be a fuckin' good idea to go test her "firearm" on some damn skeletal goats. "EVEN IF THE DAMN THING WORKS, THEY'RE STILL SKELETONS!" I told her, but she just had to go try it out. Now she's dead. I'm going to transfer one of the farmers to Mechanical work in her stead, we have enough plump helmets to last a life-time anyhow. Then the skeletal giant eagle came back and murdered our new legendary engraver as he was trying to collect a sock or something stupid like that.
I had just about given up hope on making a living up on the surface and was about to order everything permanently sealed off when we caught that fuckin' eagle. We got him sittin' in a cage down in the storeroom now. I'm not sure whether I want to display him in the dining room, our have our military beat the shit out of him until he is dead. Maybe I'll let the others decide.
I got the walls all finished so Goblin Thieves will have a harder time getting in here, and even if they do get in, they'll still have to work there way past all the dogs and traps we have set up. I'm starting to build a ceiling over the walls now because I don't want our giant eagle friends to return and start pecking at us yet again, at least this way we'd be safer than with an open ceiling. The metal industry is just far too slow to be acceptable, I think I'll have to get down to the magma levels after all, I just can't accept how slow this is going.
I'll have to wait for the next migrant wave to begin that push however, our numbers have been slightly decimated. Six deaths total, three unplanned, and one baby snatched, in two years. I'm having Elizar make more coffins, might as well be prepared for all this bloodshed. Hopefully this plague of stupidity stops and we won't need them though.
edit: forgot to have my normal conversation at the end of my post.
Anywho, my next project is to finally get some dwarves outfitted for real military service. Haakon will be the milita commander and Ron will be second squad leader. Then I'm going down to the caverns, hopefully cavern 1 will be friendlier to me than the outside, because that just hasn't been working for us so far. Also hoping for some early magma, I don't want to have to dig all the way to the magma sea just to get my metal industry going for real. ((usually I just stick to coal based metal industry, but outside is so dangerous here, I just don't want to do that.))
