Journal of Signild (Unknown date):

Well, I've been here for Armok knows how long and we've done nothing but kill animals. This crazy ass priest guy insists that Armok must be pleased. I'm just wondering how long it will be before this guy starts sacrificing actual Dwarves, that's why I'm just trying to lay low for now.

I like the pillbox idea for the outside, maybe you could put signild in one as a lookout.

That was actually on my list of things to do once I get enough stone dug out.  I'm just worried about Giant Eagles showing up and killing my Masons so I want to put a ceiling on everything so I'm putting this stuff off a bit until I have a couple more Masons and can get the job done quicker, also have a couple archers and other soldiers watching over them so yes, that is on the list of things to do.  And by journal entries I just meant whatever your character thought about what was going on so far.  First Season was actually really productive so I'm hoping I can keep the pace up.

The question is how much outside do we encompass.  Right now, I have a little bit walled off but if we want a significant portion walled off and covered up for protection, we'll have to do a lot more work to do.

probs not alot of outside, just enough to get some wild strawberries growing and some guard towers up, also has the map got a small hill / mountain side? if it has, could put the dead in it?, also does the crossbowmen actually pick up bolts on here?

We're built right into the Mountain side, but I think I can find a decent place for burial until we get Communal Tombs built.  Anywho, I'm going to go until Winter and post a bit about it.

edit: I'm thinking maybe a 20-by-20 area enclosed with guard towers built into the walls ala Medieval Castle style the towers will probably be about 4-by-4 or 4-by-5 built on the outside of the walls with a 2 fortifications on the 2nd level (just above the wall) and the 3rd level being entirely for show and to make it look a bit more castle-y.

Sounds good. Once you get enough dwarves for a military, Signild could lead the marksdwarves and patrol the castle walls.

Journal of Sareesa, 10th Timber,

Our fortifications are coming along, after I spotted a Giant Leopard across the river which, thankfully, he couldn't cross.  With the influx of immigrant masons the fortifications are coming along well.  One of the two planned Guard towers looking over the river has been completed and is merely awaiting a roof.

It was going well until a group of Snailmen wandered around scaring off our masons.  Ron, a right fine dwarf in a fight, and I ran off to fight these Snailmen.  Ron didn't have enough time to grab his sword, but I had the Bismuth Bronze Sword I brought with me from the Mountainhomes so we weren't completely unarmed.

Ron, for all his lack of weaponry proved his worth today however.  He punched one of the Snailmen so hard his head was struck open and he died instantly.  I downed the other two with my sword, decapitating both.  Snailmen, they might not be the most dangerous things in the world, but if we're going to make our homes here, it is only proof we need to worry about our defenses first and the crazy rambling of a crazy priest second.

-Sareesa

Elizar looked at the plans for the first wall of the fortifications he was to build.  Apperantly Sareesa didn't know exactly what she was asking for when she wanted this "castle" built.  He muttered something to himself about wanting to get back to building statues as he directed his 3 helper-dwarves to where they should place the batch of stone they were bringing up.  He got back to his work and sighed, when he saw them coming.  They looked remotely like humans... but they had strange appendages growing out of thier heads when it hit him and he yelled "SNAILMEN, EVERYONE INTO THE FORT!"

Sareesa was sitting with Ron in the Communal dining room, as she stifled a yawn.  Her hand was on the hilt of her Bismuth Bronze sword.  She took a long drag on her pipe she was smoking and puffed the smoke into the air before finishing her mug of Dwarven Rum.  "Ron, I think the wooden weapons are all done, go grab a couple so we can get training." Sareesa said.  She had started to get rusty since she had nobody to practice with for six months and was looking forward to this training.

The doors busted open and Ron flew backwards and nearly fell when the masons started yelling something about Snailmen.  Sareesa stood up and looked around, "What, you're going to let some overgrown insects interupt you?  Ron, belay that order let's head out."

"... but I don't have . . Sareesa where are you going, wait for me!"  Ron yelled as he ran behind Sareesa apperantly forgetting he didn't have any weapons with him.  Sareesa ran up towards the fortifications when she saw the Snailmen.  Three of them, ugly little things slimy and protected by thier shells.  Sareesa let out a yell as she charged towards the first of the three Snailmen.  Ron quickly ran towards the second and punched it in the stomach with such force it instantly threw up all over him.  The viscous fluid got stuck all over his arms and he wanted to pull back and go clean himself immediatly but resisted the urge.

The Snailman Sareesa was engaging raised it's leg to kick at her and get her away from him but she sliced is leg off and then with a quick flourish of her blade cut the leg into two pieces.  Towering over the prone Snailman, Sareesa planted her blade with such force into the enemies head that it came loose.  Surprised Sareesa momentarily stood there, expecting him to move, or perhaps to regrow his head, but he didn't.  Sareesa looked at Ron and saw him punching the Snailman and yanking on it's eyestalks.  Then, he punched it with such force that the head of the Snailman seemed to explode and it's brain particles were scattered all over the grass.

Both Sareesa and Ron rushed towards the third Snailman that was trying to run away.  Ron grabbed it's leg and punched it multiple times trying to break the leg  through the thick layer of slime protecting it.  Sareesa rushed forward and while the Snailman was distracted by Ron aimed for the head and threw her sword towards it's head.  The blade found it's mark and sunk in deep.  As the Snailman fell over, Sareesa reached him and grabbed the blade out of the bloody orifice that used to be the Snailman's face.

Sareesa and Ron were sitting on the hill afterwards and watched the flies and lizards picking at the Snailman corpses.  "You did good there Ron, you keep that work up and you'll be leading a squad someday."  Sareesa offered Ron a pipe with some tobacco.  This place was already beginning to feel like home.

((That's about the only interesting thing that happened really, I've been so focused on building up those defenses I've sort of put the inside of the fortress to the side for the moment.  I've finished the first two levels of the living complexes set up the "lower" class which lives on the first floor workshops, and started producing some rope and bags.  Also got my Jail carved out on the floor as well as the slums which are basically 2 square bedrooms, one for the bed, the other for... I dunno, dropping extra socks on I guess.  For the next bit of story I'm planning on getting those first 2 stories completely done and starting on the third and forth at least as well as furnishing my slums for both the Lower and Lower-middle class.))

edit:  Was at school and bored so I added a telling of the story from a Third-person perspective.

How's signild doing so far?

As a side note: I can't imagine a Dwarf smoking a cigar, a pipe rather.

Not too bad actually, I've been having her cut up the gems I've been finding a lot of, she even made a couple "Large" gems which I've never seen before.  Don't know if it's random or skill based or what but I was able to buy an anvil and cloth bin with just one of those suckers, so I might just keep you on as a jeweler, if you don't mind of course.

Never thought of that, I guess it makes sense, I suppose.  I'll go edit it to say pipe.

Sorry internet pooped out last night right as I was going to post so the post was lost, I'll attempt to recreate it.

I've decided to go with third person story-telling as I think it's much more coherent and in general a better format for telling what has been going on.  Also, I would like to extend an invitation to anyone on the fence to go ahead and join, give me more to write about when I have more dwarves to keep track of and also opens up more story opportunities.

Signild hurried back inside from the autumn chill.  She motioned to a couple of dwarves standing near-by to drag her purchases inside.  She had gotten a great deal on a large clear garnet she had made just week earlier, able to buy both an anvil for the metal industry and a bin full of cloth.  Signild headed for the food stockpile and took out some plump helmet biscuits that Viscoth had been working on lately.  At least the priest was good at something other than being crazy.

Elizar looked over the fortifications and realized just how much progress had been made.  The first tower was completely finished and merely had to have the scaffolding taken down.  The walls were up completely finished, the flooring over the open space was coming along nicely and he had been able to make some more statues lately to decorate the new community dining room.  It was the most tasteful room in the entire fortress, thanks to his 4 statues.  Of course, Sareesa wouldn't be happy if these Fortifications weren't finished completely in the by the next winter so there was a lot more work to be done, considering Sareesa wanted a roof over the entire thing to protect the dwarves from the Sun's harsh light as well as the towers from which the archers would be able to shoot out at any invaders.  Elizar sighed as he directed his dwarves to finish the second bridge, he couldn't wait until this was all over so he could go back to making statues.

As Elizar worked on the Fortress above ground, Tree worked on expanding the fortress below.  The Temple and Storehouse, both were needlessly large in his opinion, a thirty-five-by-thrity-five storehouse would last the dwarves forever and while it did uncover many useful building materials, the temple was just completely unnecessary.  It was really nothing more than a waste of space for some priest's ego.  Tree sighed as he got back to his mining, hopefully he would be able to get back to his true love, growing soon enough.

Towards the end of the winter months, on the 12 of Obsidian a party was organized and nearly everyone in the entire fort attended.  Viscoth, during this party chose to make an unexpected announcement.  "Our fortress will be expecting new migrants soon, and it is for that reason, that I view crime as an increasing concern for our community, so from this day forward, I would like to name Ron, as our future sheriff, with all the privileges and responsibilities that such a position entail."  Viscoth announced to the sound of much applause throughout the room, though many dwarves, drunk as they were didn't even know what they were applauding at, just that somebody they knew was getting a position of honor.

In the ensuing ruckus of congratulations to Ron, both Sareesa and Viscoth slipped out.  "What do you think you are doing?  I need Ron in the military not prancing around throwing dwarves in jail for no reason."  Sareesa said poking him in the chest.

"Don't worry, he'll still be in the military, the reason why I appointed him was he wouldn't have enough time with training and everything to be able to throw dwarves in jail.  It's a safety-measure." Viscoth retorted.  "I know safety comes first in any outpost and that this one is at risk for all sorts of trouble.  That's why I'll be giving you a second squadron, made up of marksdwarves when the next group of migrants come."

"Oh..."  Sareesa said, certainly not expecting that as an answer.  "Well, thanks. . ."  Sareesa said as she watched Viscoth walk off to his room to sleep.  "Guess you're not such a terrible leader after all."

((Not as good as my first draft I think in some places, but better in others, so I guess this gets to pass.  In other news Viscoth and Sareesa are the first lovers of the fortress, maybe I can work this into the story somehow, that's the news for now, oh and we're officially one year old.  Go us.))

Journal of Signild (Sometime in Autumn):

Damn it's getting cool out, but that doesn't stop me from going out to trade. I think it's cold now, but just wait till winter. I don't understand why we really need a sheriff to run around beating people for stupid reasons (Thus halting production), but since we're getting some rowdy migrants soon, the sheriff may be needed to keep them in line.

The only AI's spawned across the river and since it didn't freeze I was fine to just leave the tigermen their rather than risk it in combat.
