Still, even triple the size of a spear is kind of stupid.

What size are humans?  I guess I could just check the raws.

Humans are 70000.

Elves are also 60000, oddly. I never imagined them to be the same size as a dwarf, but who knows.

Same with pikes,dorfs cant use them,even though i sometimes get migrants who are skilled with them??.

Well size is pretty much volume. Dorfs are (_) and others are [].

I'd have to agree with the above guy and assume it's volume.

60000 () = 60000 |

No way to know for sure though.

I believe it is volume (in cubic centimeters, if I'm remembering something from the raws correctly). That the min size is 62500 and dwarves are 60000, though, means that there would be some dwarves who can wield it - look for ones that are exceptionally tall or broad.
