I have one of these(always one, not always the same one, as a few have met with unfortunate accidents and also gory deaths when they flew into my fort before i put a roof on it) flying over my fort occasionally, and i've been wanting to catch some for obvious reasons. However, they generally except for that one time stay around zlevel +9 to +17. Sooooo, how in the world do I get it down and into cage traps?

I suppose the alternative is going up there and building cage traps, but i'm hoping for an alternative :/

Build a couple of these. Will catch all wildlife on the map, guaranteed. Will also catch tons of goblins, too, just from walking through it. When I built four of these on my map I caught almost a dozen live giant eagles within a year. It was super effective.

You could probably do with fewer cage traps if you're just going for wild animals, though. I had the center square of the cross lead into another trapped corridor and then into the base proper, so it had to be enough to consume most of a goblin squad in the event of a siege.

Cage traps are Pokeballs. Eagles are Pidgy. You want to be the very best.

Good luck.  I have yet to even see one, even after telling them 'You're fucking eagles!  Fly everywhere, for Armok's sake!'

Also, I would totally capture a Fire Imp and use it against any Giant Eagle trainers.

I want to say it would get out of control and you would get a message saying 'Your world has burned unto its end,' but we all know that a Black Bear named Smokey the Grim Fate of Wood would show up and stomp the fire out while being unharmed itself.

Clearly only he can save us from our own insanity dwarfness.

I've captured a Giant Cave Swallow by baiting it with a donkey inside a long tunnel covered by grates. I'd go with the method posted above though.

When I've caught giant eagles it's been by having them fly into my fort and hit the traps in my entranceways, where the ceilings forced them to ground level.

Just build this and a wall on top in a suitable place. Nothing else is needed and eventually you will have an eagle.
