the caverns i appeared in were apparently under an ocean. i did try saving and reloading, still a crundle. i couldnt find the crundle in legends.

Well thhen give it a nickname and kill some stuff until it gets longer.

oh ocean... yeah you are Boned...
The only(Fix) solution here is to walk all the way back to land grab runesmith and poof your self to the surface.
Killing your self might as well means leaving a powerful megabeast which gains a boost in stats for being an adventurer. having a creature like that means all quests would be based on killing that and you said it was trapped on a isle which makes this doubly bad for your quests.
I would have suggested not to save and task manager kill dwarf fort which bring up the last save but you saved... oh well at least you be having fun in this version.

Don't worry, this is quite natural. Your Gods just got a little drunk and messed up a tad. I'm sure they'll fix you up... if they remember a lone crundle in the depths of the earth... Ya, your just gonna have to adapt
