Blinking dwarves
« on: September 07, 2010, 10:35:08 am »

Some of my dwarves are blinking, from normal color to gray and I can't figure out what doest that means. Are they dirty? Then why the don't wash themselves? I have a working well, soap and everything.

It means that they have reached legendary skill level at something. Check out dwarf therapist, it's a life saver.

That question bothered me too until I figured it out. I thought they were getting old and were gonna die soon. Heh!

That's only when the crystal in their palms turn red...

Thanks! Good to know. They are my two miners, and it seems that one of them chose the new reservoir as his "special secret place" to hang in. I was tempted to flood the reservoir anyway, but now I'll try to bring him out of there before that.

Sounds like your legendary miner is in a burrow or has no path back out. Easy to solve.

Congrats, Psieye. This is the first time I've seen a derailed thread get put back on the rails.

No, there is a way out. Two, actually, and there is a lot of traffic at the moment, because other dwarves are dumping rocks and placing floodgates.
He just loves to go and stand in the southeast corner of the reservour untill he is thirsty or hungry, then he goes to the dining room and then back again. I guess that since he has no girlfriend and his room has no door, yet, he needs some privacy to look at some good old bearded women porn.

I'll designate some mining to bring him out of there when the time to open the source floodgate comes.

Fixed.

Miners will probably be the first dwarves and easiest to hit legendary. (And most replaceable...) If you ever lose one, assign some grunt to mining and he'll level up in no time.

One advantage of non-legendary miners (a reason you might want to keep a couple of idiots around) is that they don't always leave rocks behind.  The higher their mining skill level, the more likely it is that they will leave behind a usable rock when they dig out a tile.  If you're digging out an area just to make space, you might be better off sticking some plebe in there so you'll have fewer boulders to clean out.  And save your legendaries for digging out minerals and gems where they will dig out every last bit of it.

I don't understand, though that is about right with anything DF related.
I just hope he dies the same death that all dwarfs deserve: liver disease.
