can i start a new fortress in a world which contains a fortress without abandoning it? if not, is this a planned feature?

Are the fortresses there for psychological reasons?  Are they trying to hold back entropy itself, rather than the goblin hordes?

No, and no.  In the future, the world will actively progress, with battles and wars and all sorts of good stuff, with your fortress participating in the outcome of the world.  Having multiple fortresses will not work in such a world.

You'll have to create a new world for each new fortress.

However, you can make a copy of the save folder, give it a different (folder) name, load the new save, abandon the old fort & start the new one.

This doesn't allow interactions between your fortresses, or even synching of their calendars, but does mean you can use one world for multiple embarks simultaneously.

My personal variation on this is to make the backup before the 1st embark...

Or just save the seed and generate with that.
