Automated sea life processor - will it work?
« on: September 06, 2010, 08:03:46 pm »

I just had an idea. When embarking on an ocean(which I haven't done yet), you build or dig out a hole in the ocean, and this hole causes water to rush in, bringing with it, hopefully, any sea creatures, and it sends those sea creatures through enough serrated disk traps to make sure even a zombie whale won't survive. Afterwards, the water pushes the pre-processed materials to a spot that you can get to, while the excess water gets pumped off-map/back to the sea.

For it to work, it'd need:
> A means to shut off the flow, in case of accidental flooding, or to clean the weapon traps periodically. A lever-linked floor hatch should work.
> An output system. I think a large amount of grates/floorbars where the blenderized sea life stops would probably work. It'd have to be enough that ALL the water would be gone, so that your dwarfs could collect the materials without having to stop it. Maybe disperse pressure so that the stuff doesn't fall through.
> A way to remove excess water. A tunnel beneath the previous step can lead the water to a pump stack to the surface, possibly powered by the inlet flow if neccessary. Water pressure alone might be able to do it, if there was a vertical shaft, but I'm not sure.

So you're not only planning to farm mermaids, but the entire ocean? Also, the only proper way to deal with the excess water is to drain it into Hell.

If you have a river or aquifer anywhere around, you could dump excess water into that too. They absorb, as well as create, water.

You can safely dump water into caverns. It will flow off the edge of the map. Be warned that low-lying parts of your caverns may become flooded if they weren't already, though, resulting in less usable floor space.

Alternatively, more work but less overall complications, just dig an outlet path until you are one tile away from the edge and then smooth and fortify it. The water will run across the fortification and off the map. Just don't let your dwarves get pushed through.

They can do that? What's the death message if they go off the map?

Y'know, the title of this thread is much more awesome than the actual thread.

I think the title should be "Automated sea life processor - Will it blend?".

I have no idea. I wouldn't want to know, though. Better safe than sorry.

so, whats your plan to make this renewable?  I vote building a drawbridge to allow for blocking the vacuum chamber.  also, try throwing in some cage traps (make an aquarium? :D)

This is a useful feature..and this is DF.. so im gonna assume its bugged
That's what cages and minecart shotguns are for!  We don't need to control them.  We just need to aim them.

Things in water don't seem to go with the flow of water, otherwise we could make some prospecting streams.  The best bet would be to somehow lure sealife into the trap.

Seems there's a new use for cheese makers...

But others might prefer to have the mess contained behind windows to avoid tracking blood all over the their nice, color coordinated floor patterns. Kind of the Ozzy Osborne vs. Martha Stewart debate.

Sea life likes liquid fire, correct?

Make an obsidian aquarium. It'd be awesome.

Due to the exact mechanics of water this is harder than you might hope.

Well if you really want something good that you should make shure all water is drained trough grates instead of weapon traps. That way all creature will airdrown instead (ok walrusses won't work).
