The hairy sphere thing or whatever it's called assumes the sphere is completely covered in hairs. A human head isn't. It's actually possible to comb one's hair on a normal head without leaving a bald spot.

Hairy ball theorem, in German also known as 'hedgehog theorem': You can't comb a hedgehog without leaving a bald spot.

And no, you can't comb a normal human head without leaving a bald spot: Your eyes, for example, are (hopefully) entirely hairless and thus bald.

A human's head is only partially covered in clearly visible hair. A special case doesn't disprove the theorem, but has a separate truth value. I never claimed it to be possible to comb over the entire head, though that'd also be, with long enough hair; still a special case, though. My point is, the example in that textbook is a poor one.

Well, the latter part seems to push it into sophistry a bit, IMO.

It's times like this when I wish I had long hair. I could give picture evidence if I did, but worded descriptions will have to do.

To comb your hair, and not your whole head: comb all of them to one side of your head, parallel to each other. The part of your head describable as your hair has no bald spot. Semantics, ho!
To comb over your whole head: take one third of your hair, completely wrap it around your head in one dimension. Repeat with the rest of your hair in the other two dimensions. There would be no bald spot if your neck wasn't there.

The thing is, human hair only covers part of the head, is quite long, can bend and is dense enough to overlap, unlike the hairs in the theorem. The theorem doesn't apply in this special case.
