Eeeeyep. I don't understand it myself, but when I read it a decade or so ago, it was only 8. AFAIK, it's a combination of the endorphins released to counteract the "shock" your body takes, the fact that your heart strains a moment, and the muscles in your abdomen (and sometimes other places) clenching tightly. I think.
