I have a spaceship capable of achieving 99.99% the speed of light. If I spend four years on board going at speed, I might come home and find that the year is 2021.

No, it's totally not in my head. And yes, despite owning and operating a complex interstellar spaceship on my own I find the calculations too difficult to actually bother figuring out how much time dilation I'd experience after a trip of four years.

When you think about it we are all time travelers.  We're just caught in a freefall along that particular axis with no easy means means to slow, stop, or reverse our fall.  It may be entirely possible that some of us are approaching the time pavement and will spontaneously splatter in all directions and cease to exist as the person beside you falls into a time manhole and gets one more precious milisecond of life before they splatter and mix with the time sewage.

Or something like that.  Physics isn't my thing.
