I'm trying to make a little "plumbing" project in my fort, but I need to drain the water somehow, so it doesn't flood everything. Can I dig a tunnel all the way to the edge and let it drain there or do I have to bring it up to the surface and dump it there? I think I can also dump it in a cavern, but can a cavern be completely flooded?

You can dig out the fringes of the map.

Okay, thanks for the quick reply. Time to get diggin'! Also, and unrelated question, is it possible to somehow channel or otherwise remove the floor without leaving ramps at the edged?

You can go down a z-level and use the Z designation to remove said ramps.

You cannot dig away the edge of the map. But you can drain water through the edge of the map by:
1) dig to the edge
2) smooth stone of the edge wall (the one you can't dig away)
3) carve fortification into the smoothed stone
4) drain!

[edit: obviously this only works in stone layers, not in clay]
