Update 27: Lights in the Sky
The first UFO in July was a Small Scout, crewed by “Ethereals”. The only information we had was that they were the controlling masters behind the invasion, but we did not know much of their capabilities.
The UFO was spotted over Northern England…
…and was destroyed by the Lightning in mid-air. Despite going at maximum speed, the Lightning was able to catch up with it.
At the same time, another Small Scout was picked up on the Decoder. This one was headed for Southeast Asia, and was detected off the coast of Africa.
The Lightning was ordered to bring it down, but the UFO was far away from its position.
While the Lightning raced after the Small Scout, another Medium Scout appeared over Europe. This one was crewed by “Mutons”, which we had never heard of at that point.
We didn’t have to worry about them just yet, as the Firestorm destroyed them over the English Channel.
Nearly an hour later, the Lightning caught up and destroyed the Scout over Tibet.
Later in the day, another soldier arrived at Evening Star.
He was assigned to the Lightning as part of the new squad. The arrangement was that the newer soldiers would take the Lightning to smaller UFOs, while the more experienced officers would take the Skyranger to the bigger ones.
Another Scout was detected and destroyed over the Mediterranean. While it would have been more productive to follow these craft and attack them on the ground, we couldn’t afford to have our craft away while UFOs were popping up around the world.
We had encountered and destroyed five UFOs in the span of two days, more than the number showing up in April. Although Command was curious about the two new alien species, letting their UFOs fly around and waiting for them to land (if at all) would be bad for X-COM’s secrecy.
UFO-38 was the only one we launched a recovery for, because it had not been completely destroyed by the Firestorm.
Of course, the low number of aliens surviving the crash made it easy for us to clean up.
On the 8th, the Interceptor at Morning Star finally shot down a UFO – a Small Scout over the South China Sea.
The next day, we detected a larger UFO – an Abductor heading for Europe.
This one was just off the coast of Portugal, within the range of our Elerium-fueled craft.
The Lightning shot down the Abductor easily, and descended after the burning wreck.UFO-40 crash landed July 9 in Germany

Foley: Ship’s right here, hole in the hull.
Foley: Hmm.
Foley: On second thought, discretion is the better part of valor.
Foley: West side clear.
Rion: So this is where they perform their experiments…
Hal: I’ll just camp here for a while. Call if you need help!
Noa: See anything yet?

Dave: Two in three shots? Nice one.
279: Gravlift clear.
MEANWHILE
Foley: A Sectoid?
Foley: Haven’t seen you guys in ages.
Foley: Hmm…Hal?
Hal: Yeah?
Foley: Blow up that barn.
Hal: Okay…
Hal: Hang on, still getting used to this thing.
Hal: …co-ordinates set, now…
Hal:.. launch!
Foley: I hope that farmer didn’t have anything much in there.
MEANWHILE
Anja: Okay, ascending gravlift.
Jones: Upper corridor clear.
Anja: Looks quiet to me.
279: Nothing to report.
Anja: Sectoid!
Max: Got it.
Anja: Huh.
Max: Another Sectoid down, path to bridge clear.
Max: Bridge clear.
Anja: Now that’s efficiency.
Anja: I’ll just finish off your scout.
Foley: Last one over here!
Foley: Wasn’t even facing the right way.
