Actually the Plasma Rifle is both lighter and more powerful than the Laser one, but if you want to.

I have no idea where The Poet got hit, since there was no damage to any area. As a consolation prize, take the fact that he was hit with the Heavy Plasma and didn't even take damage. (It's the one carried by the mind-controlled Medic later) Also, he was wearing the Power Suit.
