Every time I hear "game... for the wii" I just cringe, especially when the game involves combat.

Are any of those games actually any good? I honestly haven't tried very many since I don't own a wii, but the ones I have tried on friend's consoles were pretty awful. The only skill involved was flailing your arm around quickly, with timing or strategy having nothing to do with it.

I really want to see a swordfighting game involving motion sensors.

i checked the game and apparently it should have motion controlled movements and blood and gore but then SEGA took publishing rights and screwed this up.

They made that game some time back. It's called "swordfighting".

yes all you pasty video game players. Why not go outside and get some fresh air?

Go to your local cutlery shop, they often carry some sort of swords. You could get a big Bowie knife and call it a short-sword. Tell your friends to get some too. You can use trash-can lids as shield, BRILLIANT!

Now depending on how many friends you have, you can pick a spot. A nice open field would do well for a Braveheart style suicide rush. However if gladiator battles is what we want then maybe a backyard is better.

Have at it. Keep some Band-Aids and Bactine around for cuts. Have plenty of Rockstar Energy drinks around to keep you going in the event of blood loss.

that has the disadvantage of not having the significant blood loss. Stubbed toes and sprained ankles doesn't get me going in the morning.

Randomly ran across a gladiator game today. Haven't tried it, so I have no idea if it's good or not. But it sounds like it might do what you want.

One thing I've probably never seen in a gladiator game, though, is most fights actually NOT ending in a fatality. Seriously guys, shit didn't look like Spartacus, most fights were non-fatal, make a game that actually reflects that.

Yeah, but it's like Westerns. Imagine if the real Old West were portrayed in a video game.

Pretty boring. Unless you're into kickass things like being a frontiersman, panning for gold, hunting buffalo, and drinking until you pass out.
Shit, I would have loved Red Dead Redemption to be that game. Of course, seeing how it came out for consoles I really never expected it to be a game that would be brave that way. Sad thing, really. Shit, you can't even die of dehydration :(

Most fights actually were fatal. The writings of Seneca on this subject make clear the lethality of the sport. Those coming to the arena via the courts system were especially likely to die. Seneca describes a situation in which only one side was given a weapon, to easily dispatch his opponent, then the weapon given to the other side next, and so on till all prisoners had killed each other.

There were fights with blunted weapons, venationes in which animals were hunted, boxing matches with cesti, etc. But the crowd pleaser was guts on the sandy floor. This is one of those things that really is as extreme as popular conception holds it.
I'm unfamiliar with Seneca's writings, but from what you say, it sounds like they speak primarily of convict fights. If you had actual gladiators, people they spent large sums of money on to upkeep and train, then I doubt they'd let them die at the nearest occasion unless they performed poorly.

Although Seneca did live during Nero's rule and he's often portrayed as a bit psychotic, so the high death rate may also be attributed to him.

The forge is pretty good if you can get the bloody thing to run, if I remember right the sword is mouse controlled and damage depends on the body part you hit.
