I was under the impression that "Natural" wall tiles had the same indestructibility as "Constructed", so non-magma-safe stone in the magma sea won't melt until it has been mined.

Yep. It's natural rock, and therefore, indestructible.

Like making a magma channel out of claystone. Or wood.

This pretty much sums it up. You can build a magmaduct from ice blocks, and it won't melt. Even fortifications made from ice won't melt that way, since constructions are 100% invulnerable.
