Ultima 8 - despite not exactly offering you much freedom of choice, it featured a few seperate magic systems. The most interesting one, in my opinion, was the pentagram-based ones, as you had to align black and white candles in the right places as well as reagents. And the spell utilizing this I remember best was the demon summoning spell. The thing about it was that you summoned the demon to kill one person. If you failed to supply a real name, it would attempt to kill you. Though you could also enchant a wand of banishment for that occassion.

Everything based on D&D has nice, powerfull and creative spells.

When you play NWN1 as a warlock alone, you feel like a god :P
Care to share a few stories about creative magicking in NWN?

I dunno, it seemed to me that the only option was pretty much Haste, Time Stop, Isaac's Missile Storm, Isaac's Missile Storm, Isaac's Missile Storm, Win Forever.

Yeah, playing a wizard or sorc in nwn1 was an absolute blast.
No. Sorcopal.

Sorcerer + 1 lvl of paladin. It means that all your awesome charisma bonus goes to your saving throws too, and also you can get a high "discipline". The best class (multiclass) ever in NWN.

Dominions. Magic that lets you do a LOT of stuff, from mutating creatures, to magic weapons, to building second suns or plummeting the world into a dark/ice age and make undead rise up from the ground throughout the world. Magic's pretty much the main reason I play the game.

i dont remember the name of the game, but there was a fairly recent (2000's) game where you draw all of the spells with your mouse.

the game itself was pretty fun, it had underground kingdoms and stuff, and the magic system didnt feel tacky at all.

as for magic in games i have yet to find a game where it would be intresting. If we are talking about pc games. One thing that i miss is creation of spells. Metamagic in nwn and similar have come close but still there is no way to teleport a beating heart out of the enemy.

Another interesting "magic" system I remember was from Darklands. Rather than collect various spells, your party members gained knowledge of various catholic saints from monasteries around medieval Germany and could later choose to pray to a saint before battle. No fireball casting here, just buffs that could pretty much be attributed to beliefs.

And speaking of beliefs, Teudogar and the Alliance with Rome also had an interesting magic system, as there was a stat measuring belief. The stronger this belief the "stronger" (more convincing) curses/enchantments your character could cast. But the stronger belief also meant the character would be more affected by magic cast on him. Again, all this could be attributed to what characters believe rather than real magic as such.

There are three Dominions do they all allow that? or did they just sack one?

Technically wasn't magic, but divine intervention. For fireballs, though, you could just brew up some Arabian Fire.

I liked the direction the spell system of Armok I was going. Basicaly you could teleport someone's orgas out of their body, regrow stuff, and of course your generic huge fireball thing.

No, it was called exactly sorcopal in all PvP clans I was in.

Funny thing, I turned my entire skull into bismuth, and nothing happened. My upper spine? Perma-cripple.

Well, you don't exactly have to move your skull around, now do you? Your jaw isn't a part of your skull, so it doesn't count either.
