Oh, I dug a lot.
« on: September 05, 2010, 10:51:41 am »

Help! I dug 11 levels, and my miners found a cave. After a while mining, my miners found a downward passage. Well, what is the danger if I get there? The downward passage is deeper than 58 levels. :o For a beginner like me, this is probably deep ... :P
PS: This is the first spring of my fortress. :'( The first thing I did was dig. ;)
Sorry for my bad english, i from Brazil  ;D
And what is the utility in getting there?

Well, caves contain critters and you might get forgotten beasts there...
it is advisable to seal your entrances to the cave (or, alternatively,
seal a part of the cavern for your own use) until your fortress has grown a bit ;)

The caverns btw. are in (almost?) all regions of the world,
it is a worldwide interconnected cave system with 3 layers and the deeper layers being more dangerous than the higher ones.

It would be wise to wall it off or place a floor over your down stairs until you have some military.
The caverns could spawn dangerous creatures.

The benefit is, that from now on undground crops and trees will grow everywhere on underground soil in your fortress. When you are ready to defend yourself you can explore the cavern, use it for farming, collect webs, mine gems and so on, but for now: Be careful!

Yep, and they contain soil that you can use for underground farming...
therefore the alternative I suggested...
if you seal up a part of the caverns you have to be careful, however,
to think about the many up and down ramps that exist there
and also think about sealing your part of the cavern from the ground to the ceilking
(some forgotten beasts are able to fly)

And you should be quick with sealing up your partr of the caverns (at least at the ground level)
(which is why you should wait a little bit, until you have enough masons for the task)

Hmm... But, about titans, there are titans? Or just when my fortress get 80 dwarfs? I hope there are no titans, and no HFS.

You can still dig around the caverns and mine some minerals and ores from the outside without breaking in.

OTOH silver and gold are not that rare ...

Sometimes i flood out lakes, and that is the more easy way to get mud.

The titans of the underground caverns are the forgotten beasts I mentioned...
and they can be much more dangerous compared to "normal" titans.
(and, as said, some of them can fly and some other swim...always take this into account)

Constructions, like walls and floors, cannot be destroyed, not even by creatures with the tag "building destroyer"
(same goes for fortifications, but AFAIK some fluzid or gaseous forgotten beasts could use these as entrance)

You shouldn´t use doors or grates however, as these are among the things, a building destroyer can destroy
