Looking over my earlier attempt at doing a game of Astroid, I realized the major drawback of using a tabletop system as-is for a play-by-post game.
Now, taking major inspiration from Super Robot Wars, I am reworking the concept so that you no longer need a calculator to see where you can go and where your guns can reach.
And I'm supplementing it all with robots of my own design.

The following is a wall-o-text that describes the game the way I think it might work. It is not yet complete.

Alright, I'm done with the Colonist robots. Does anyone have any comments so far?

It's spelled Asteroid.

Sorry I don't have more, I didn't read the first post.

Heh. No, Astroid. As in, here. The thread's old, and most of the images are gone by now. My avatar is a repainted Devastator Astroid.

So how is this going to be played?
I read the whole thing, except for the astroids.
Is it going to be play-by-post? Or tabletop?

Can't wait to see more.  :D

See the thread I linked to. Some pictures have survived on the last few pages - it's going to look kinda like that, except more compact and with less clutter on the map.

Essentially, we'll have a strategic mode where, each turn, 3 players declare which of the tiles on the mini-colonyscape they want to occupy. Once all have done that, they have a go again and declare which of the opponents' occupation attempts they want to thwart. That done, battles begin. Up to 3 battles simultaneously per turn. The maps are smallish, and each battle should resolve fairly quickly. Surviving sides gain their experience and return their robots to the base so they can be used later. This repeats until one side wins, either by killing off all of the enemy robots, or achieving the global objective. Theoretically, the game can be done in 1 turn - but for that, someone would have to deploy a reduced attack force (5 units) against the full defending force (9 units) and likely a supporting force of the third player, who also wants to win eventually (another 5 units). So, 5 versus 14. If you win against those odds, you are a strategic genius and deserve it. :)

Took a detour from drawing for the moment, invented a cost calculator for astroids, used it to rebalance the Colonists. Will now proceed to Raiders.

Status style finalized, Raider statuses and costs completed, Mercenaries underway.

Once those are done, it'll only be terrain and map tiles left, if those. We can always play on an ASCII map.

Also, if anyone can spot any exploit now, please let me know. Better to plug these things in development than when the game's on.

Trying a map mockup here...

     A   B   C   D   E   F   G   H   I   J   K   L
 1   .   .   .   .   .         .   .   .   .   .
 2   .   .   .   .   .         .   .   .   .   .
 3   .   .   Z   .   .         .   .   .   .   .
 4   .   .   .   .   .         .   .   .   .   .
 5   .   .   .   .   .         .   .   .   .   .
 6   .   .   .   .   .         .   .   .   .   .
 7   .   .   .   .   .         .   .   .   .   .
 8   .   .   .   .   .         .   .   .   .   .
 9   .   .   .   .   .         .   .   .   .   .
10   .   .   .   .   .         .   .   .   .   .
11   .   .   .   .         .   .   .   .   .   .
12   .   .   .   .         .   .   .   .   .   .

I just love these spreadsheets. Anyway, how much info will you (players) need on the map itself? I got the terrain itself covered, I'd like to know what to put into the unit-containing tiles. Unit name, level, type, move, and shield is essential. Anything else? Units will have full stats in spoilers posted every turn, but they won't be too handy. Do you need to know which weapons the unit has? If so, what stats do you need shown per weapon? I'd like some feedback here.

So the aim is for one side to hold all three Victory points then? Sounds fun!

Err, no. Just one, specific to each team. Colonists start on the Control Center, and need to capture the Orbital Port. Raiders start on the Orbital Port, and need to capture the Storage Vault. Mercenaries start on the Storage Vault and need to capture the Control Center. As soon as any of these is captured by a team that needs it, the game is won. Nothing will happen if Raiders capture the Control Center, or if Colonists capture the Storage Vault, or if Mercenaries capture the Orbital Port - only ownership will change. A team will keep existing as long as at least one map tile remains owned by that team, so giving the key point you own away to a stronger opponent won't do anything to you if you have another outpost somewhere.
