Why not call it a "Blip-blabble-dink"?

Then nobody will be confused and everyone will look closely at how it's made and thereby be aware that it's got some wood in it as well as some rock!

I am so dang smart.

That's an interface problem, not a bug. I'm sure I'm not the only one that tried to craft a Wooden Weapon and ended up with a Wooden Weapon Rack thanks to a cut-off menu option. As I recall, it says in the help screen where you're told how to make obsidian short swords that they have wooden hilts. And if you've ever tried to make one when you didn't have any wood, or simply paid attention to the workshop while the craftsdwarf worked, you'd notice. Moreover, it's required wood to build obsidian short swords since I started playing DF back in January.

Now why does it require wood? Because if you could make decent weapons out of just stone, which is virtually unlimited, why would you bother making metal swords? Decreasing the damage wouldn't be realistic since well-cut obsidian is more than an equal for steel, and even when item breakability is added it wouldn't be a problem for a well-prepared military. Wood, which you can run out of even on a treeless map, puts some limit on it. And while that limit was added in older versions where obsidian and magma were guaranteed on every map, it still applies to some extent even on the current version.

I'd go with ≡Obsidian-Edged Wooden Sword≡, myself.

If you want to break it down...

Make Wooden Sword -> Edge With Stone

OR

Make Obsidian-Edged Wooden Sword

...so people have options. Say, training weapons, don't have obsidian, or maybe higher quality(carpenter crafts the base item rather than yer stonecrafter hacking something together with the wrong tools/shop).

As for how it's used, well, swords in DF are slashing weapons, and that's how you'd use it, so short sword's an apt enough term. Clubs and axes, additionally, are top-heavy impact weapons, so the sword skill is again the most apropriate(it is, afterall, basicly a giant razor).

Mind you, I personally see no need to change it.    :p

Use TAB to expand the menu to 2/3rds the screen width.

Changing the name is really unnecessary.

I'm not sure how the thread even managed to derail for two pages debating something so silly - the man asked his question and got an answer. Case closed!

Obsidian glass is sharper than modern steel, and it still might be best to represent this fact with the Macuahuitl, if it is indeed a Macuahuitl, by keeping the name "sword".

To me, the word "mace" conveys "blunt" no matter what material it has in it.

I don't care what you call them, so long as I can continue mass-producting them and making insta-gib weapon traps containing 10 of them.  :)
