Scenic Entrance to your Fort?
« on: September 04, 2010, 01:03:32 pm »

I was thinking of digging a tunnel under a river and damming it, replacing the river floor with green glass floors.
That way, you can observe wildlife above and determine which one to air drown!

I always make a bridge over a magma lake. There is an island in the centre, seperating the two bridges, which usually contains a really elaborate trap, or just a classic cave-in trap.

I'm personally really into channels downward, covered by drawbridges. I dunno, I just feel like there's something bad-ass about a trap-door entrance to a fort.

I once made the entrance to my fort go through a waterfall.  I found a nice tall one that dropped about 5 Z levels.

I'm considering producing large billboards and signs surrounding my fort.

Scenic entrance, huh?  Well, my entrance is pretty much permanently stained with blood and littered with corpses.  It's nice.

I usually try to do some covered fortifications... no light exposure, protection from wildlife, and it looks badass

I think in my next fort my entrance will be completely submerged in water, with a temporary tunnel formed from bridges when I want to let stuff in or out.

I was going to have that too, only I realized after I dug everything out that when the bridge was down, the water would actually flow into the fort and down the spiral ramp.  So now it only covers the entrance when I have it closed up..  Kind of useless, but it looks nice.

I like the idea. I had a blueprint idea in mind as I was reading this. Should've figured someone else would come up with similar. Now the real question, is it going to be a simple design, or something over-engineered?

Depending on depth, you'll need a reliable power supply for the pumps if you're using them, unless you're planning on using a stylish entrance/exit that's wagon-accessible.

Give me a sufficient amount of time, and I'll try to mock up some plans. I think it would read easier if I use ASCII-Draw to design with. Hopefully, it should take no more than 2 images to make the plans. Knowing me, I want to make something with style and function.

I love it. One of the few references I can understand.

I generally like leaving it rough, myself.  There's something interesting about having a crappy, rough stone entrance and basic downward passage opening up on a massive, lavish cavern fort.  Otherwise, I usually make it out of clear glass or gem windows if I'm so inclined.  Nothing too ostentatious, but enough to make it clear we've got some serious wealth.

Do you always look at it in ASCII?

You get used to it, I don't even see the ASCII.  All I see is blacksmith, miner, goblin.
