Steel and charcoal/coke
« on: September 04, 2010, 11:50:51 am »

Hi folks.  New to the game, been playing for a week or so now, so I guess this is my introduction.

Anyway, I'm on a map with no lignite or bituminous coal, but I'm pretty sure I should be able to make steel with charcoal.  Unfortunately, "make pig iron bars" isn't available at my magma smelter, so one of two things is wrong:

1. I'm mistaken, and coke is required, or
2. There's a bug.

If it's 2, I'm hoping there's a workaround.

Also, if it helps, there was no flux listed on my embark screen (but I went anyway because it was a volcano by a river and I wanted to play with it), but I did find marble by looking in the caldera and dropping z-levels until I saw a wall of it.

You can make charcoal from wood at a wood furnace, but you need flux stone anyway:

If you can't find it, buy it from the caravans and raise priority during negotiations.

Yes, I know.  I have marble.

Sorry, I really need glasses. ;)

But you need coal or charcoal for the reaction nevertheless.

Right. So I have:

Charcoal
Iron bars
Marble
Magma smelter

And I can't make pig iron.  I'm pretty sure I should be able to, though.

I'm going to build a regular smelter and see if that helps.

It should work at a magma smelter too.

There was a thread recently:

I thought it should, so it must be a bug, but I can't find a way around it.  I've dumped and reclaimed all of the charcoal and iron just in case.  Still no dice.

You must also have a dwarf with the "furnace operating" labor enabled.

Yeah, checkmark by that as well.  I can smelt anything else I like just fine.

I've had lots of weird bugs.  Like the map where no one would move logs no matter what I did.  I may delete everything and start over.

Diacritic, assign a Manager if you haven't already, then see if you can get Him to issue the order for pig iron.

Found it!  So, I had to clear all of the other orders off my smelter, let the game run for a second, and then the pig iron option appeared.
