GDC Austin - Dwarf Fortress Representation
« on: September 04, 2010, 09:00:12 am »

First of all.  Shit, I hope to god this is not a joke.

Second, I wrote this piece for the AGDC on Dwarf Fortress' Boatmurdered.  Apparently winning.  This means that, "You’ll also have the opportunity to present your work in the form of a poster session at the conference on Wednesday, Oct. 6"

So hopefully, if none of this was a joke, I'll be able to represent for Dwarf Fortress a bit at the AGDC.

Wait, what is this?

This is epic.

Good luck, and I seriously hope Toady gives you his blessings (and a prep talk). Oh, and what Dae wrote.

Mine was completely left field.  The previous games reviewed all had abundant written story tied into the game.  Dwarf Fortress, as we know, involves an emergent story.  So I was quite sadly scrapping whatever I could to make a readable review (which led me to remembering about Boatmurdered).

I have to really brush up on Dwarf Fortress again.  I haven't played in over a year.
Again... hoping this was not a mistake! >_<  Losing, in this case, would not be fun.
It would truly be epic to have Dwarf Fortress showcased in a tiny dark corner of GDC!

One more thing, I could really use pointers on how to present my poster on the game narrative for Dwarf Fortress.  Pointers from the community, ThreeToe, Toady.  I'm standing on nails as to what exactly I'd be saying.  It doesn't help I'm a 100% introvert...

Heyyy, that's cool buddy. I live in Austin and considered going, until I realized the tickets are $100+ and I'm broke. Good luck  ;)

I really like the article you wrote, you broke everything down into manageable and understandable pieces, and explained how a game like Dwarf Fortress -which on itself hasn't got any narrative- can make for as much (or even more) narrative as alot of games with a prewritten story. The only remark i could make on your writing itself is the occasional using of a certain word too close to each other (the usuage of "outside" three times in about ten sentences f.e.). Keep it up though, good luck with your presentation at GDC!   :)
