You channel down, dig a tunnel, channel again, and dig back the way you came.

Edited in info:

Also, they seem to try to path the wrong way on the one way to get places faster, and this results in them getting stuck, and giving up.

...which reminds that I still dont understand ramps. Sometimes I make them and they work perfectly! Others... not so much.

Hrmm, I seem to have given out incorrect information. What they're doing is channelling to get down, and then not making it back up, as they've just dug a ramp that doesn't work.

So essentially what I made is an un-followable tunnel.

"Is your miner being chased by evil beasties? Just designate one of these! The monster's can't make it through!"

Drat. This was really cool at first, and now it's not.

So... something like this?

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

Dwarf can go onto the downward ramp tile because it's a downward ramp tile. But after going onto the tile, he can't go back up because the only way you can take the ramp (right, in this case) is blocked by a wall?

More like this.

Like I said, it's not actually a one way ramp. It's just a miner digging himself down, with no way to get back up, or be followed, except by more miners digging channels.

Then why couldn't the miners get back up in the original picture? There were ramps there.

Because they headed straight into a wall.

I'm pretty sure for a ramp to work, you need to travel to a different tile than the one you started on across Z levels.

So you think of it like a gigantic rotatable plane:

Trying to go down, the ramp leads you straight into a wall, so it doesn't work.
Trying to go up, it STILL leads you straight into that same wall, so you can't go up.

The ramp was there, but it was unusable.

Yes. So I essentially just failed all over the place. Now to build a tried and true spiral ramp! One that actually works!

I managed to do the same thing attempting to make my depot about 10 levels down. Apparently, no one can move to the same xy location even if they changed z locations.

I had this problem occur back when I experimented using ramps instead of stairs, I have since reverted back to stairs because of this.

The problem ramps can be fixed if you build walls around them orthogonally. I think you only need to have them built on certain sides but this changes depending on where the entrance and exits are on both z levels of the ramp.

A ramp can be used as long as it is placed against at least one wall, and that wall has empty floor space above it.  If that's true then the ramp can be accessed from any tile around it - if it's not then the ramp can't be used at all.  It's an oft-frustrating problem that you cannot ramp up and then tunnel back the direction you came unless you tunnel a tile in the opposite direction too.

Essentially - the first ramp will not work, the second one will.
