Pump dam

You can dam rivers using screw pumps by making something that looks like this
W=Wall
S= Screw pump
R=River
D=Dry river bed
Code: [Select]
WRRRRW
WRRRRW
WRRRRW
WRRRRW
WRRRRW
WRRRRW
 SSSS
 SSSS
 DDDD
 DDDD
The screw pumps pump the water from the river upwards from part of the river back on to it. The water is then absorbed by the river a few tiles upward. The walls prevent water from going anywhere. Do to the fact no new water can get to the rest of the river, the rest of the river dries up.

Are you trying to teach us about this technique? Because if you are, I'm pretty sure it's already fairly well-known - I've used it in several of my fortresses back in 40d (since they were in climates that never froze).

Also, your walls should be extending down 1 more tile so that they overlap with the screw pump output tiles, otherwise they'll leak along the river bank.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.
