It's not for everyone, Dwarf fortress is complicated in a delightful manner, but some prefer to have a greater degree of control. Minecraft is kind of like First Person Dwarf Fortress anyways. Keep offering I suppose, but if they don't want to play I'd say just respect that and leave them be.

Whelp, looks like you've got nothing to do but accept it.

Reading Boatmurder convinces a lot of people to at least try and tackle the learning curve. That's how I got in.

I convinced a couple of people to try it just by explaining why it's so great: the complexity and the richness of the simulation, the kind of event that can happen.

The fact that it's a sandbox game is a turn off for some of my friends.

I got some people in the TF2 group on the Escapist to try it just by talking about playing it. I wasn't trying to get them to play. They were intrigued by how I was describing it.

If you are actively trying to get someone to play DF and they won't try it, I don't think it will work. It's just not the type of game for some people, which is perfectly understandable. However, try to get him to read Boatmurdered if he hasn't. Even if he no interest in the game it's still worth a read, and it is what ultimately convinced me to tackle to learning curve and play Dwarf Fortress.

Get them to play Liberal Crime Squad first.

It's a much more accessible and intuitive game (and it's not as massively buggy, for obvious reasons).  But its control scheme and ascii-ness are a great way to bridge the gap, especially as it's just as descriptively violent, with all sorts of details in how people can get injured or traumatised, and what effects they can have.

Show him a bunch of injured war dogs dragging their guts 2 tiles behind them, I bet that'll work.

Perhaps just leave him be?

Dwarf Fortress isn't for everyone. Dwarf Fortress is for the truly insane individuals only.
