 Well when I first fired up the game my general reaction, being my first rougelike game, was "Wow, what the hell. How do I do stuff and what is that box they're around?" I then spent two days with Captnduck's video tutorials and then used the wiki for most my troubles while making my first real Fort. First Fort turned out great if you don't count the lack of minerals due to me thinking building in marble was a great idea. It eventually fell due to me getting bored with it because there was not any terrain features on the map.

My first game was a very foolish attempt to start a fortress...build inside an ice cave!

"What? Oh, they all died of thirst. This sucks."

Second attempt was much better, however...

"C'mon dwarves! Eat! Dont let the food rot!"

This was before I learned that you need to stockpile food in barrels.

Yeah, something like that. Took me at least 3 tries to realize that this is the best game that has ever been created for the PC.

2 weeks later download the compelte newbie tutorial.
Bask in understanding.
Make fort, get killed by seige.
Realise that you probably need a military in the third year.

I had not found the wiki, so no tutorials. I learned by an image I googled, which had some bedrooms, a dining room and a well on it.
So I made them a bedroom, a dining room and some bedrooms. And finally a well. Then they starved.
