Yeah, it's basically a combination of both.  If only I could have monochrome DF...

Do you always look at it in ASCII?

You get used to it, I don't even see the ASCII.  All I see is blacksmith, miner, goblin.

When I first saw it, I didn't know enough that I just thought it was just a simplistic dungeon keeper freeware clone. Then I saw a post on 4chan's /v/ about someone trying to capture mermaids to breed and kill for their bones, and all the elaborate engineering involved - and I just thought this sounds incredible - I need to have it and understand it completely! I knew very little about df going in, I think actually that helped fall in love with it in my own way while making tons of hilarious mistakes.

I would read up on something and it would say 'get your carpenter to build barrels' - and half a year into my first fort (which wasn't more than a corridor with a fishery I thought "I dont have a carpenter - damn!" and restarted. This happened a few times till I found out you could assign different jobs to people, and not just wait for somebody with that profession to show up ! /facepalm

Really I just love being lost with games, that feeling of not knowing anything that is completely awesome but which has a huge learning curve really appeals to me. I'm the sort of person that used to love games that came with massive manuals (too few these days unfortunately)- and df was like that and had a real retro spectrum feel to it due to the gfx and ui that also really drew me in.

I might end up doing that as a challenge, now that I think of it.  The luck of the draw will determine the fate of the fortress.

Wait, I can build elaborate traps to drown my enemies in magma? Awesome!!! (proceeds to screw up trap, filling fortress with nice, hot, Fun magma). This was after I read some stories and decided that I needed to play this game so I could build a magma trap. (of course this was after I built what seemed to me an awesome fortress back then)

"Thomas Biskup is going to make an ultimate roguelike called JADE, with complex world simulation and procedurally-generated content, but he has not yet gone past some simple basics. And now I find a game that already can do that?"

That's the short story of my conversion from being an ADoMite.

Ah yes, I still check his site now and then and I was thinking whens jade gonna come around when I found df(and now I know jade is never coming).

More on topic. My first thoughts were "she likes cows for their haunting moos." that's awesome unfortunatly I later found out likes and dislikes don't mean much.

I knew nothing about the game when tbino showed it to me, and he knew nothing, so we had lots of fun playing. My first thoughts mainly revolved around the fact that my Dwarves were chasing vermin instead of  preparing the fish that they had caught, and I even had the jobs enabled. Damn, now I'm getting nostalgic about when forts were hard enough without megaprojects.

"Wait, I'm not supposed to uncover that yet."

Stumbling upon a magma pipe about three steps before the tutorial said I was supposed to.

That's the great thing about this forum. We can derail any discussion into any other topic.
It's not an embark so much as seven dwarves having a simultaneous strange mood and going off to build an artifact fortress that menaces with spikes of awesome and hanging rings of death.

I read a lot of the wiki first, and Boatmurdered, and other similar stuff, so I knew what I was getting into.

Or so I thought.

First fort died of thirst. Hey, what do all these blue down-arrows mean... oh hey, it's that, well what do you mean I can't melt snow?! Aaargh...

Next fort I overengineered some things and underengineered others. Acted like building a workshop was a really big deal for some stupid reason. Made an elaborate useless stockpile system far from the workshops, and then a meeting hall far from that. Took me forever to learn how to harvest, process, etc. Finally got to magma, built magma forges, smelters, etc.. but made tunnels way too long and died a horrible FPS death.

"Warum sollte man verschiedene Symbole für den Boden verwenden? Ist doch völliger Blödsinn, erst auf Grafik zu verzichten und dann verschiedene Symbole für ein und das selbe zu verwenden."

Translated: I was stunned, how anyone would first only use ASCII and then would bother to waste multiple symbols for ground. I had been playing several roguelikes before, so I was used to minimalism.
