My first thought?

Wow, it's like Settlers II!  Only with dismemberment, suicide and lots and lots of magma.

My first thoughts..."Let's see, buildings...q key...oh my wagon is a building?  I guess I should build some walls for it?"

And so I did.  Then I flooded some stuff and didn't play for two years.

My eyes! ARGH the colors, it hurts!!!
Then, when my dwarves in my first hole in the mountain died of thirst in the first winter, my thoughts were: "Where in the hell is this *** underground river everyone is talking about in the wiki????" (The z-axis was newly introduced and I didn't know about it. So yes, my first "forts" were all 1-level builds until the wiki was updated.)

Hm ,very first thought: "Ohhhh, it hurts! I hope this mayday-thingy I read about is still available..."

First interesting thought: "So, digging sure is fun... let the little smiley faces work and hope the elephants don't come too soon! ...oh... uh-oh, why is there water coming out of the walls? Better get everyone outside... ah, elephants and cougars and goblin ambushers... oh my, surely that's the Fun they were talking about on the forums..."

.

(and now I know jade is never coming).

Where did Biskup say that?
He's working on an Adom app for the iphone now.
So he's completely abandoned it?

No, but from his ADOM blog it's kinda been complicated by Ph.D. work and some other stuff.  He's now apparently in a round of updating/bugfixing the classic and porting an IPad version out, hopefully we'll see a new PC version as well when that comes out (though "ADOM Delux" may become a reality finally via iTunes), but he's always made clear he intends to really get JADE done eventually...  it's just taken a backburner position for now.

Back on the original topic:
My first thought, as a long time rougelike player, was, while looking at adventure mode, "GAH!!!  Some of these keybindings are really bugging me, gotta change them."

In Fortress mode it was all about how cool I found the level of detail as a long time sim player (SimCity and Civ through all sorts of management and business sims, alife software (games and not) and "God Games") until I got my first migrant wave and a random peasant who had just arrived went possessed leading to my first tantrum spiral before I even knew anything about dealing with strange moods or happy thoughts, then the friend who introduced me to this game directed me to the wiki... needless to say I've never played much of Spore, which I bought the week before first playing DF and was really looking forward to at the time.

One of my first thoughts on adventure mode was "This is far too easy, if you have a full set of armour you can tear through all" then I discovered Genesis mod.

"Ok... Lets look at this... Hmmm moves slow on my PC (it was an old one, very old, 1995 old), press forward... Lets look at this menu, uh huh, uh huh, uh huh... Ok so I go build, build this build that.... So I built a Carpentry, how do I do things with wood.... Hmmm, it says to press q to set building tasks, ok Q... Uh huh, uh huh... B for Beds! ^_^... Oh needs wood... Hmmm, D for designations, t for trees, pressing enter twice make the tree go brown... Ok, lets see what happens if I move the X after the first enter then hit enter again after that.... Oh it marked all those trees... Ok unpause, hah the little dude is cutting down the trees, ok lets make that bed then... hmmm, needs to be inside, well that makes sense, d and d again, enter enter, hahah now this guy is digging into the mountain, ok lets build that bed now.... Cool... Right then, lets see what else it can do....."
A few hours later...
"Well that took a while, i haven't even gone past spring at its taken me a whole hour, lets see if it works faster on my mums laptop.... Nope ok..." Uninstall (FOR NOW)
A few months later and a better PC and reading through my Gaming Mags and finding a 4page spread on DF...
"Oh I remember that, lets see how it goes now..." Downloading...... installing..... Playing.... "Oh 1000FPS this is nice... Oh theres a Forum, lets join it and talk DF ^_^...
