Tell me of UnReal World
« on: September 02, 2010, 08:42:41 pm »

I've seen it mentioned on the boards a bit which led me to have a little raz on the demo. Not quite sure what to make of it, especially with its rather odd payment scheme (buy one patch, some patches or all the patches) and obtuse game play. It looks like something I could like, but don't feel the demo time really let's me get my teeth in enough to sink my currently rather limited funds into it.

Does anyone who owns it want to tell me how wonderful it is/isn't?

(p.s. Pretty sure this has been discussed before, but I can't find a thread for the life of me)

TLDR it's pretty fun, a bit like a more polished real-world-ish Adventure mode of DF, based primarily around just surviving in the wilds.

This awesome guy made a nice FAQ for it at http://z3.invisionfree.com/UrW_forum/index.php?showtopic=1696.

Actually, that was a while ago so some stuff has improved and changed, but there's still a lot of good stuff there.

Basically, whenever someone talks about Minecraft or any other survival game I always mention URW and Clonk. I don't think there are any better survival sims than URW. Surviving your first winter or building your own home is truly an epic feet. Though in this type of game sometimes even finding your next meal is a victory.

That thread's a few months old so I'ma post this in here.

Does anyone know why my random world generation is broken?  It always generates the same world, even after multiple reinstalls and wiping the game entirely from the computer (Registry and all)

My current guy's a kaumo hunter, with a small camp near a lake.  Did the unfortunate hunting trip and killed the bear with my dad's bow, now I"ve got like 300 meat, so food's gonna be fine until it spoils.  Got some rocks laid out to indicate the floorplan of my future home.  Lookin' good.

Did you email Sami? He's pretty good at getting back if you confront him with bugs and stuff.

The problem with this game is this:  Much like in the real world, surviving in the wilderness starts out very difficult, then gets easier once you have tools and shelter, a routine, stockpiled supplies, and know the area.  In other words...the difficulty ramps DOWN.

That's kinda what I was thinking might happen. I've managed to stumble through a few days so far building fires, chopping stuff, eating furry animals, the usual, and it's been quite pleasant. However I'm not seeing what there is to do past the point where you've made your fully stocked hut. Are there any late game post-scarcity activities?

You go hunt down the scary bandits with metal weapons and armor, and take their stuff.  Then...I don't know, you go burn down villages for the hell of it, and that's about it.

YOu know what would be cool?

URW in a fantasy world, with dragons and stuff you can slay and take their hide.  LIke a mix between DF, URW, and Monster Hunter

Isn't that what adventure mode intends to be? I admit I haven't read much about it, but in my head it works like that. I'm assuming I based it on some kind of fact at some point ;)

URW is interesting and kinda fun for about a week, in which you build a house and or commit cannibalism.  However it's lack of any long term goals aside from not dieing leave it really boring in short order.

I tried it out. It gets boring after about 2 games.

All told, I put about 5 hours into it and haven't touched it since. Glad I didn't buy it.

Yeah, pretty much after you get your first big kill, or can self sustain yourself easily, it gets really boring since there is really nothing to do except mebey try to rain a Nzerjepet camp, which is pretty much suicide.  There also isnt very much stuff to do in it, especially considering how much time they put into it, and expect people to pay for it. Which is pretty much a roguelike with a tile set, and shorter gameplay. Its a rip off if you ask me. :(

Get the demo, play a few times, delete.

a single version costs only 3€(or $, can't remember). may be a short lived game, but i would hardly call it a rip off
