Games For Skool
« on: September 02, 2010, 11:47:21 am »

So, I will be starting mt senior year in less than a week and I have more than a few people expecting me to give them time killers to play with when they are supposed to be working. Last year, I converted half of an entire engineering class to Roguelikes. I literally had an entire row of computers running IVAN. Also worth nothing, I had quite a few people playing LCS at various times of the day. We finished off the year with a constant 5 player session of Uberleben. I now need a few new graphically simple games that will run on the school's shitty computers. I already have a copy of Unreal World that I will drop on the school's servers for all to enjoy but I need more. So, any suggestions? Simple games that will draw the mainstream in with a little bit of Labs' Homebrewed Marketing.

Rogue Survivor should be an easy one.  It's got okay-looking graphics, which shouldn't scare too many people off, zombies, and shotguns, and it's a relatively simple game to learn, which should allow you to draw the mainstream in as well as the people who expect time killers.

I might have to skip Elona. ANY amount of sound on these electronic crapshoots kills the processor. Rogue Survivor might work.

Putting UrW on your school computers is a breach of your software license, unless it's a trial copy. Don't be a dick. Indy developers don't need this.

We used to play a game called Icy Tower. I'm guessing it's long dead by know, but who knows. It's about jumping up platforms and stuff.

Great Hotseat games(which don't need to be installed!):

Zatacke aka Achtung die kurve (may need installing :P)

Liero

Liquid war

Some other(singleplayer):

DesktopDungeons(ten-minute-roguelike)

Spelunky (side-scrolling cave exploring game with randomly generated levels. look for spelunky portable)

I second liquid war. It came with an old Linux distro I had, I used to love playing with my brother.

I set up all the lan machines in my middle school with Descent.

...But then, that kind of keyboard+mouse noise would surely draw attention (and not be very alt-tabbable).

We were playing Starcraft in school  8). No, teachers didn't care about it or that it was pirated. Tbh looking back I'm not too sure if they even knew its illegal to copy stuff just like that. Well now that wouldn't be possible with all those fancy laws and police actually caring about that kind of stuff.

I too would reccomend starcraft.

My school went through a phase of a game called warsow - Within a week of it being introduced, every available computer was being used to play it (until we played it so much we brought down the school network and the IT staff came down on us like a ton of bricks).
Open TTD is also an option.

You may also want to look into abandonware - It's free, and just about any computer nowadays can play it.
